McLennan women fall to Blinn in OT
The McLennan women's basketball squad opened the 2023-24 season with a tough 67-65 overtime loss to the Blinn Buccaneers on the road in Brenham.
It was all Blinn in the beginning. The Buccaneers opened on a 6-0 run as McLennan struggled to find the offensive rhythm. A pair of Aysia Ward free throws put McLennan on the board midway through the first quarter. Blinn extended the lead to nine, 11-2, before McLennan began to rally. Saneea Bevley drained a 3-pointer from the corner to give McLennan the momentum. Alaina Payne followed with a bucket and one to make it a 6-0 McLennan run. The rally continued and McLennan took its first lead of the game at 17-16 with one minute to play in the first quarter. The teams traded the lead with Blinn leading 21-17 after the first.
Mersadez Nephew opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer from the top of the key for McLennan to pull within one, 21-20. The game was tied at 23 with 7:52 to go in the second. McLennan put together a 6-0 run to begin pulling away from Blinn, and extended the lead to nine at intermission, 40-31.
McLennan controlled the third quarter, leading 57-42 heading into the final period. Blinn fought through the fourth quarter and tied the game at 59 I the final minute to force the extra period. The Buccaneers outscored McLennan 8-6 in the extra frame to steal the two-point victory.
Saneea Bevley led the McLennan scores with 20 points and Mersadez Nephew added 14.
