Highlanders sink Pirates
The McLennan Highlanders sank the Victoria Pirates 109-69 tonight at The Highlands.
McLennan dominated the first five minutes of the game, opening on a 24-0 run. Nick Shogbonyo began the scoring for the Highlanders with a pair of free throws, and Jaden Juarez added a layup. Shogbonyo added another pair of free throws and followed it with a 3-pointer from the elbow. Antwone Gonzales drained a 3-pointer and then went 2-3 from the free throw line to make it 14-0. Jaden Walker added a bucket but before the ensuing foul shot, a pair of unsportsmanlike technical were called on the Victoria bench. Shogbonyo drained the four free throws, and Walker made his to make it 21-0. Evan Chatman then hit a 3-pointer from the corner, 24-0. Victoria finally got on the board with a pair of Kalen White free throws with 14:21 to go in the first half. McLennan had the game already in hand, and led by as many as 29 in the first half. The Highlanders would lead 60-32 at the break.
Victoria opened the second half on a 5-0 run by Connor Miller to make it a 60-37 McLennan lead. The Highlanders responded with a 4-0 run by Antwone Gonzales and continued to pull away. The comfortable lead allowed the Highlander subs to gain some valuable playing time as Coach Gill had a steady rotation.
Nick Shogbonyo led McLennan with 22 points, and Antwone Gonzales scored 21. Daylon Dickerson and Jaden Walker scored 13 points each.
