Highlanders upset No. 3 Kilgore
The McLennan Highlanders upset the No. 3 Kiglore Rangers 67-51 tonight at The Highlands.
McLennan came out fired up against the ranked opponent. Tyree Davis began the scoring for the Rangers with a driving layup in the lane. McLennan responded with a nothing-but-net 3-pointer from the corner by CJ Hall followed by a driving bucket from Nick Shogbonyo to go up 5-2. The Highlanders led 8-7 with 16:24 to go in the first half and pulled away with a 6-0 run, including a dunk by Kaleb Pouncy, pushing the lead to 14-7. Kilgore cut the lead to four, 18-14, with 5:55 to play before the break but McLennan continued to pull away. The Highlanders led 23-17 with just over three minutes to go and ended the half on a 6-0 run to lead by 10 at the half, 29-19.
The Rangers opened the second half with back-to-back layups by Isaac Hoberecht to trim the lead to six. The Highlanders held the 31-25 advantage with 18:44 on the clock. McLennan broke the game open with runs of 4-0 and 8-2. The Highlanders led by as many as 17 midway through the half when Kilgore began to rally. The Rangers cut the lead to nine, 54-45, with 5:39 to play. McLennan pulled away once again and the Rangers couldn't recover.
Nick Shogbonyo led the Highlanders with 16 points and Jared Clawson added 12.
