The 13th-ranked McLennan women's basketball squad continued to roll through the schedule, crushing the Coastal Bend Cougars 84-63 tonight at The Highlands.
It was all McLennan at the beginning as the squad opened on a 9-0 run. Coastal Bend was held scoreless for almost two minutes of play before a drive to the basket by Treasure Upson put the Cougars on the board. McLennan pushed the lead to 10 at 15-5 with 2:48 to go in the first half but Coastal Bend began to fight. The Cougars got rallied with a 7-0 run to pull within three with 54 seconds to go in the first quarter, 15-12. McLennan added an Amerie Flowers basket but a Marissa Otiz 3-pointer pulled Coastal Bend within two, 17-15. Jalayah Ingram's basket just before the buzzer made it a four-point McLennan lead, 19-15.
McLennan opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to go back up by nine but once again the Cougars rallied with strong shooting from behind the arc. Coastal Bend hit five 3-pointers in the frame and trailed by three with 2:45 remaining before the half, 32-29. McLennan stepped up, rattling of a 10-0 run including five points from Hannah Mouton to go up 42-29. Britzeida Sanchez added three for the Cougars in the last seconds to trim the McLennan lead back to 10, 42-32.
The third quarter opened with another 5-0 McLennan run, breaking the game open. Mouton led the charge for McLennan, scoring eight in the quarter. McLennan pushed the lead to 20, 56-36 with 4:03 to play in the third. Coastal Bend made a late rally but McLennan led by 17 going into the final period, 62-45.
McLennan led by 16, 66-50, with 7:22 to go in the game. A 10-0 run highlighted by six points from Mouton put the game out of reach.
Hannan Mouton led the McLennan scorers with 21 points and Charnelle Hoof added 17. Tyla Roberts and Kennedi Ard scored 12 and 11, respectively. Jalayah Ingram added 10.
