McLennan women's basketball moved to 2-0 on the young season with a 61-56 victory over the Angelina Roadrunners this evening at The Highlands.
The game was tied at four with 7:26 to go in the first quarter. A Jaylah Ingram 3-pointer from the elbow started an 8-0 McLennan run, giving them the 12-4 lead midway through the period. McLennan held the Angelina at bay down the stretch and led by six at the end of the first, 18-12.
McLennan opened the second with back-to-back buckets by Amerie Flowers to take the first double-digit lead at 22-12 with just over nine minutes to play before the half. The Roadrunners began to chip away, pulling within three on an Alannah Nerocker 3-pointer with 3:52 to play in the quarter, 24-21. McLennan ended the period on a 9-2 run capped with a Kennedi Ard 3-pointer with 30 seconds to go to take the 33-22 advantage at the break.
Angelina's India McMahon took the game into her own hands in the third quarter, scoring 16 straight for the Roadrunners to pull them within one, 39-38, with 4:48 to play in the quarter. A 5-0 McLennan run composed of a pair of free throws from Jalayah Ingram and a 3-pointer by Hannah Mouton increased the lead back to six but a three-point play by Lanaijha Johnson for the Roadrunners trimmed it back to three going to the final quarter, 47-44.
McLennan opened the final frame on a 7-0 rum with three points from Ingram and four from Flowers to push the lead back to double digits, 54-44. Angelina pulled within three in the final minute by Mouton added a pair of free throws with five seconds to go to seal the win.
Amerie Flowers led McLennan with 19 points and Jalayah Ingram added 14.
