The McLennan women's basketball squad demolished the Hill Lady Rebels 74-51 this afternoon in Hillsboro.
McLennan scored first with a jumper from Aniya Williams. Hill took the lead with a KJ Walker 3-pointer from the corner on the next possession. A steal and bucket by Williams followed by a layup by Aysia Ward put McLennan up 6-3 but another Hill 3-pointer tied the game at six with eight minutes to go in the first quarter. McLennan led by four, 19-15, with two minutes to play and used a 3-0 run to push the lead to seven, 22-15. Hill ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to trim the McLennan lead to three going into the second, 22-19.
McLennan led by two, 27-25, with 6:59 to play in the second. Jalayah Ingram went 1-2 from the free throw line to start a 5-0 run that extended the lead to seven, 32-25. Hill rallied late in the quarter, using a 7-0 run to tie the game at 34 with two minutes to play before the half. Mersadez Nephew went 3-3 from the free throw line in the final seconds to give McLennan the 27-34 lead at the break.
McLennan stepped up the game in the third quarter, opening on a 4-0 run with buckets by Ingram and Ward. Defense was strong for McLennan in the frame as the squad held Hill to just six points while scoring 15 in the frame to lead 52-40 heading to the fourth. McLennan continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to 23 at the final buzzer.
Jalayah Ingram led McLennan with 19 points, and Mersadez Nephew added 17. Aniya Williams and Kalisha Phillips scored 13 and 10, respectively.
The McLennan and Hill men's game was postponed due to a leak in the gym roof at Hill. Details for a make-up date will be announced later.
