Highlassies squeak by Grayson
In a game that came down to the final seconds, the McLennan Highlassies defeated the Grayson Lady Vikings 74-70.
Grayson jumped out to the early lead, leading by four at 7-3 with 6:42 to play in the first quarter. Mersadez Nephew and Mele Kailahi combined for a 10-0 run to put the Highlassies up 13-7 less than two minutes later. Grayson rallied late in the quarter to cut the McLennan lead to one going into the second, 18-17.
Mersadez Nephew opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run of her own to put McLennan up by eight, 25-17. Once again, the Lady Vikings rallied and took a two-point lead on a Sali Kourouma from the corner with 3:51 remaining in the first half. Grayson led by three with, 32-29 with just under two minutes on the clock. McLennan ended the half on 7-0 run including five points from Nephew to take the 36-32 advantage at the break.
McLennan held the five-point lead early in the third. The Highlassies began to pull away with an 8-0 run including four points from Brielle Dorsey to extend the lead to 13, 47-34. Grayson began to chip away and McLennan held the 54-49 going into the final period.
The Highlassies led by nine, 69-60 with four minutes to play. A 6-0 run by Grayson trimmed the lead to three with 2:48 to go. The Lady Vikings pulled within two a couple of times in the final minute but Jaidyn Fontenette went 3-4 from the free throw line to secure the win.
Mersadez Nephew led McLennan with 26 points and Mele Kailahi added 19.
