Highlassies fall to Collin
McLennan is No. 3 seed in Region V Tournament
The Collin Lady Cougars needed overtime to defeat the McLennan Highlassies 92-86 on Wednesday night at The Highlands. Collin secured the second seed in Region V and bumped McLennan to third.
Both teams were hot from three-point range in the first half, with 14 combined made shots from behind the arc. Collin led 13-12 with 14:14 to play in the first half. McLennan opened the game up with a 12-0 run over the next two minutes to take the 22-13 lead. The Lady Cougars fought back, cutting the lead to two, 24-22. The Highlassies pulled away once again and led by 12 at the half, 44-32.
Collin cut the Highlassie lead in half with 13:08 remaining in the game, 50-44. McLennan extended the lead to 15 just three minutes later, 61-46. The Lady Cougars rallied down the stretch, taking the one-point lead, 74-73 with 59 seconds to play. Shanice Davis' bucket and foul shot put the Highlassies back up by 76-74 with 43.37 seconds to go. Collin's Shomari Harris tied the game at 76 with 6.71 seconds on the clock. McLennan had two chances to steal the win but both shots bounced off the iron, forcing overtime.
The Lady Cougars opened the extra period on a 4-0 run and extended the lead to six, 84-78, with three minutes to play. The Highlassies cut the lead to one with 2:13 to go, 84-83. Collin went 8-10 from the free-throw line and held McLennan to one 3-pointer from that point forward to seal the win.
Freshman Amani Davis led the Highlassies with 19 points. Shanice Davis and Ashley Bean added 18 and 11, respectively.
Both the Highlassies and Highlanders will compete in the Region V Tournament next week at Lubbock Christian University. Men's action gets underway on Wednesday and the women tip off on Thursday.
