Highlanders punch ticket to World Series
The No. 2 McLennan Highlanders punched their ticket to the NJCAA Division I Softball World Series with a 10-2 victory over the #12 Temple Leopards this afternoon in the Championship Game of the Southwest District B Tournament. Landrie Harris picked up the win in the circle for McLennan.
McLennan began the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Tehya Pitts and Trinity Allen both walked and advanced on ground out by MJ Nicholson. Macie Jansky then doubled to score both runners.
The Highlanders added five runs in the third. Allen singled and Nicholson reached on an error. Delanie Roeder came in as the pinch runner for Nicholson. Jansky walked to load the bases. Ally Thompson also walked, scoring Allen, and Aynsli Lawson followed with a grand slam.
Both of Temple's runs came in the top of the sixth. Lily Garcia doubled and Emily Delgado walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Garcia scored on an error. Jasmine Benavidez walked, and Delgado scored on a fielder's choice by Reese Cottrell.
McLennan sealed the run rule with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Allen led off with a solo home run. Nicholson singled and Jansky walked. All runners were safe on Thompson's fielder's choice. Lawson's fielder's choice scored Nicholson, and Pitts singled to score Jansky to give the Highlanders the victory.
