McLennan Softball sweeps Temple in doubleheader
The No. 6 McLennan Softball team picked up a pair of wins over Temple today to take the conference series over the Leopards 3-1.
McLennan came from behind to take game one 13-5 in six innings with Abigail Ramirez picking up the win in the circle.
Temple jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Aahmyri Kennedy singled and stole second. Catrin Hoffman followed with a single to score Kennedy. Annabel Segoviano singled to score Hoffman, and Segoviano scored on a double by Samantha Gaona.
McLennan got on the board with two runs in the top of the third as Ka'Lyn Watson reached on an error and scored on a Caitlyn Wong home run.
Temple added a run in the bottom of the third. Darby Hickey reached and advanced to second on an error. Erin Faske replaced Hickey as the runner at second. Segoviano then singled to score Faske.
McLennan tied the game with two runs in the fourth as Jenny Robison walked and scored on Jalie Neff's home run.
Two more McLennan runs scored in the top of the fifth as Riley Rutherford doubled and scored on a Julia Herzinger home run.
Temple's final run came in the bottom of the fifth. Segoviano singled and was replace by Kristen Urbanovsky as a pinch runner. Gaona walked and was replaced by Hannah Boettcher. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Urbanovsky then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kate Moalo.
McLennan sealed the run rule with seven runs in the top of the sixth. Sidney Campion and Erin Plunkett both singled, and Wong walked to load the bases. Rutherford followed with the three-run double. Herzinger and Robison followed with back-to-back home runs. Maddie Saven then triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Neff.
Game two was dominated by McLennan from the start as Hailey Hudson picked up the 13-4 win in the circle.
McLennan scored two in the second as Herzinger singled and scored on a Robison home run.
Four more McLennan runs scored in the third. Plunkett doubled and Sydney Kirby reached on an error. Rutherford then doubled to score Plunkett, and Kirby scored on a single by Herzinger. Rutherford came in to score on an error, and Herzinger scored on a sacrifice fly by Saven.
McLennan added two runs in the fourth as Campion singled and scored on a Kirby home run.
Two more McLennan runs in the fifth made it a 10-0 lead. Herzinger and Robison led off with back-to-back walks. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Neff.
Temple scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to avoid another run rule. Autumn Bell singled and Kennedy reached on an error. Hoffman followed with a three-run homer.
Temple added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Moalo walked and was replace by Urbanovsky as the runner. Urbanovsky then advanced on a passed ball and scored on a double by Jalen Perez.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh. Rutherford led off with a solo home run. Herzinger then doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Robison. Rachel Warren replaced Robison as a pinch runner. Warren advanced to third on a passed ball and Saven walked. Campion then grounded out to score Warren.
Conference play continues Wednesday for McLennan, hosting Cisco for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
