No. 13 McLennan Softball takes series with No. 4 Grayson
No. 13 McLennan and No. 4 Grayson split today's conference doubleheader in Sherman.
Grayson took game one 8-4 with Matie Wolkow taking the loss in the circle.
McLennan began the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Erin Plunkett walked and Caitlyn Wong singled. Hailey Hudson followed with a single to score Plunkett.
Grayson took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. JT Smith singled and stole second and third. Amiah Galcatcher then reached on an error, bringing Smith in to score. Ellie Vance came in as the pinch runner for Galcatcher. Hailey Vess singled, and Vance scored on a single by Tara Stewart.
McLennan tied the game with a run in the top of the second. Riley Rutherford and Maddie Saven both singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Rutherford then scored on a ground out by Ka'Lyn Watson.
Wong's solo home run in the top of the third gave McLennan the 3-2 lead.
Grayson took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Kye Stone led off with a double and scored on a single by Macee Cobb. Cobb advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Sage Harlow. Kenna Collett singled and Vess reached on an error, bringing Harlow in to score.
Two more Grayson runs scored in the fifth as Cobb singled and scored on Smith's home run.
Grayson's final run came in the sixth. Galcatcher singled and was replaced by Carsyn Cox as the pinch runner. Vess reached on an error, and Cox advanced to third on a fly out by Stewart. Kaylee Hewitt then singled to score Cox.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh. Jenny Robison was hit by the pitch and advanced around to third on a pair of wild pitches. Julia Herzinger then singled to score Robison.
McLennan bounced back to defeat Grayson 5-2 in the nightcap to get the series win. Hailey Hudson picked up the victory in the circle.
Three McLennan runs scored in the top of the first. Plunkett reached on an error and Wong followed with a two-run homer. Rutherford also reached on an error and Herzinger walked. Jalie Neff then singled to score Rutherford.
Grayson got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second. Stewart singled and Stone reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Stewart scored on a ground out by Cobb.
Another Grayson run scored on Harlow's solo home run in the fifth.
McLennan's final two runs came in the top of the sixth. Herzinger singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Robison. Neff walked and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Saven. Sidney Campion then doubled to score Herzinger and Neff.
McLennan travels to Tyler for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against the Apaches.
