McLennan Softball rolls over Jones & Galveston
McLennan scored one in the top if the first as Ka'Lyn Watson walked, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out by Caitlyn Wong and scored on a wild pitch.
Jones tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second. Carly Lewis walked and stole second. Lewis then advanced to third on a single by Gabby Hoffman and stole home.
Home runs by Erin Plunkett and Wong in the third gave McLennan the lead.
McLennan exploded for eight runs in the top of the fifth. Plunkett and Wong both singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Jalie Neff walked to load the bases. Riley Rutherford followed with a grand slam. Jenny Robison reached on an error. Caitlin Bradley-Tse then doubled to score Robison, and Watson followed with a two-run homer. Plunkett rounded out the scoring in the inning with a solo home run.
Jones added three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hoffman doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Holly Craft. Karagan Howard singled and Iris Favre walked. Sarah Ballard came in to pinch run for Favre, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Kathryn Smith then singled to score Howard and Ballard.
Three more McLennan runs scored in the sixth. Maddie Saven and Rutherford both homered. Bradley-Tse and Plunkett both singled. Wong then singled to score Bradley-Tse.
Jones also scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Skylar McLellan singled and advanced on a passed ball. Jones walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Craft followed with a three-run homer.
McLennan's final two runs came in the top of the seventh as Neff singled and scored on another Rutherford home run.
In the nightcap, McLennan defeated Galveston 10-3 with Anissa Arredondo picking up the win.
Galveston began the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning as Aviana Gonzalez doubled, moved to third on a fly out by Maria Andrade and scored on ground out by Maddie Brewer.
McLennan responded with five runs in the bottom of the second. Plunkett and Julia Herzinger both walked and advanced on a fly out by Saven. Campion walked to load the bases. Sydney Kirby followed with a grand slam. Watson then hit a solo home run.
Galveston added a run in the third. Kenzie Chambers and Zoie Garcia both singled. Chambers then scored on a ground out by Asijah Hammons.
McLennan added two runs in the third as Wong singled and scored on Herzinger's home run.
Three more McLennan runs scored in the fourth. Wong hit a home run and Plunkett walked. Herzinger followed with a two-run homer.
Galveston rounded out the scoring with a run in the fifth. Alyssa Castellano drew a lead-off walk and Chambers single. Castellano was out at third on fielder's choice by Garcia, and Chambers was caught stealing. Hammons then reached on an error, allowing Garcia to score.
McLennan returns to Waco for its home opener Friday against San Jacinto. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Bosque River Ballpark.
