McLennan Softball goes 3-3 in Chipola Tournament
The McLennan Softball squad opened the 2021 season with a 13-9 win over the second-ranked Chipola Indians at the Chipola Tournament in Youngsville, Louisiana. Gracy Crafts picked up the win in the circle.
McLennan exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning. Rosemary Rivera drew a lead-off walk, advanced around to third on a ground out by Kadyn Trochim and scored on a double by Bailey Krolczyk. Caitlyn Wong drew a walk, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Melayna Lopez then walked to load the bases. Krolczyk game in to score on a Chipola error, and Julia Herzinger walked to reload the bases. Lindsey Evans followed with a bases-clearing triple. Sidney Campion walked and stole second. Genesis Rodriguez then reached on an error, moving Campion to third. Rivera followed with a two-run homer.
Two more McLennan runs scored in the second. Wong doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Kenzie Chambers. Chambers then moved to third on a ground out by Herzinger. Evans reached on an error, bringing Chambers in to score. Campion walked and Rodriguez singled to score Evans.
Chipola got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second. Shakara Goodloe singled, Ava Worthy was hit by the pitch and Karlee back walked, loading the bases. Goodloe then scored on a passed ball.
Four more Chipola runs came across in the fourth inning. Goodloe walked and Worthy singled, moving Goodloe to third. Worthy stole second, and Goodloe scored on a fly out by Sierra Jevyak. Yoshie Omori bunted for a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Evette Morgan. Tammie Libjers followed with a three-run homer.
Chipola added three more runs in the fifth. Gabby Bess walked and Alexis Cosgrove singled. Goodloe followed with a walk to load the bases. Worthy was hit by the pitch, bringing Bess in to score. Madisyn Riggins then reached on an error, scoring Cosgrove and Goodloe.
The final Chipola run came in the bottom of the sixth. Natalie Kopicova was hit by the pitch to start the inning. Bess singled and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cosgrove. A sacrifice fly by Goodloe brought Kopicova in to score.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with three runs in the seventh. Evans walked and scored on a double by Campion. Rodriguez then reached on an error, moving Campion to third. Rodriguez stole second and Campion scored on a passed ball that put Rodriguez on third. Rodriguez then stole home.
In game two of the day, McLennan defeated the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs 13-7 with Reese Taylor getting the win in the circle.
Mississippi Gulf Coast scored three in the top of the first. Rakeya Travis led off with a home run. Alexis Laughlin walked and Briana Shores singled. Shores stole second and K.K. Agner singled, bringing Laughlin and Shores in to score.
Another Bulldog run scored in the second. Anna Avant drew a lead-off walk, stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Caroline Moore. Travis then singled to score Avant.
McLennan took the lead with seven runs in the second. Herzinger, Lopez and Trochim all walked to load the bases. Chambers also walked, scoring Herzinger. Campion reached on an error, allowing Lopez to score. Rivera followed with a grand slam. Krolczyk reached first and moved to second on an error. Evans then singled to score Krolczyk.
MGC added three runs in the third. Agner reached safely on an error and Kristian Jones singled. Sarah Brannan bunted and moved to second on an error, allowing Agner to score. Jones scored on a line drive by Hannah Herrington. Avant drew a walk and Brannan scored on a wild pitch.
Five more McLennan runs scored in the fourth. Evans led off with a triple and scored on a single by Herzinger. A ground out by Melayna Lopez and single by Trochim moved Herzinger to third. Secilia was safe on a fielder's choice, loading the bases. Anissa Arredondo replaced Herzinger at third. Campion then singled to score Arredondo and Trochim. Rivera then doubled to scored Secilia Lopez and Campion.
McLennan added another run in the fifth as Evans doubled, stole third and scored on an error.
On the second day, McLennan suffered a 14-4 loss to the Northwest Florida State Raiders.
McLennan jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Sidney Campion walked and Rosemary Rivera was safe on an error. Bailey Krolczyk was then hit by the pitch, loading the bases. Lindsey Evans followed with a fly out, bringing Campion in to score. Rivera and Krolczyk both advanced on an error, and Rivera was caught stealing home. Kadyn Trochim walked and Julia Herzinger then singled to score Krolczyk.
Northwest Florida State took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bailey Cox walked, moved to second on a pop fly by Gabrielle Fischetti and advanced to third on a ground out by Cameron Hall. Abby Sulte then singled to score Cox. Lee Martinez was hit by the pitch, and Emma Alley singled to score Sulte. Martinez moved to third and scored on an error.
McLennan scored its final two runs in the fourth. Mackenzie Adams was hit by the pitch and moved to second on a ground out by Genesis Rodriguez. Campion then doubled to score Adams, and Krolczyk singled to score Campion.
The Raiders took the lead again with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brittini Rufus led off with a single, and Cox singled. Fischetti followed with a single to score Rufus, and Cox scored on a ground out by Hall. A sacrifice bunt by Sulte then brought Fischetti in to score.
Northwest Florida State sealed the run-rule win with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ivey Hill walked and Abbott Stafford reached on an error. Sckylier Baronet replaced Stafford as a pinch runner. Rufus was hit by the pitch, and Cox singled to score Hill and Baronet. Rufus scored on an error, and Fischetti was hit by the pitch. Cox then stole home. Hall walked and Sulte reached on an error, bringing Fischetti in to score. Martinez followed with a three-run home run to end the game.
McLennan's second game of the day was a tight battle with San Jacinto squeaking out an 8-6 win.
San Jacinto took the early lead with two runs in the top of the first. Garcia and McKnight both walked. Forrester reached safely on an error, bringing Garcia in to score. McKnight then score on another error.
McLennan tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the first as Evans doubled and scored on a home run by Krolczyk.
The Coyotes scored two runs in the second to regain the lead. Burnet singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Saenz doubled to score Burnet, and Saenz scored on an error.
McLennan added a run in the second. Adams and Kinzie Chambers both singled. Campion followed with a single to score Adams.
San Jacinto scored two in the third. Childs reached on an error and scored on triple by Winters. Burnet then singled to score Winters.
Two more McLennan runs scored in the bottom of the third. Evans singled and Krolczyk walked. Evans came around to score on an error, and Melayna Lopez doubled to score Krolczyk.
The Coyotes scored a run in the fourth as Garcia walked, moved to second on a ground out by McKnight and scored on a single by Bailey.
McLennan also scored run in the fourth. Rodriguez drew a lead-off walk and Campion was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on a ground out by Rivera. Rodriguez then scored on a sacrifice fly by Evans.
San Jacinto scored one run in the fifth to take the 8-6 lead. Winters walked, and Burnet and Cantu both singled to load the bases. Saenz then singled to score Winters.
McLennan Softball jumped back into the win column with a dominating 14-3 run-rule victory over the Northwest Florida State Raiders on Day 3 of the Chipola Tournament. Gracy Crafts picked up the win in the circle.
Northwest Florida State began the scoring with a run in the top of the first. Brittini Rufus and Bailey Cox drew back-to-back walk to lead off the inning and advanced on a double steal. Lee Martinez followed with a sacrifice fly to score Rufus.
McLennan jumped on the Raiders early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. Sidney Campion walked to lead off the inning and scored on a Bailey Krolczyk home run. Mackenzie Adams walked and scored on a Julia Herzinger triple. Kadyn Trochim then singled to score Herzinger. Trochim moved to second on a wild pitch, and Kenzie Chambers walked. Trochim moved to third on another wild pitch and Chambers stole second. Yet another wild pitch scored Trochim and put Chambers on third. Genesis Rodriguez walked and Chambers scored on a wild pitch.
Two McLennan runs scored in the second as Adams singled and Herzinger homered.
Gabrielle Fischetti homered for the Raiders in the top of the third, cutting the McLennan lead to 8-1.
McLennan added three runs in the bottom of the third. Campion doubled and scored on a Rosemary Rivera home run. Lindsey Evans followed with a solo shot to centerfield.
Another three McLennan runs scored in the bottom of the fourth. Herzinger reached safely on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Trochim walked but was out at second on a fielder's choice by pinch hitter Caitlyn Wong. Kenzie Chambers replaced Wong as the runner at first and then stole second. Rodriguez followed with a double to score Herzinger and Chambers. Rodriguez moved to third on an error and Campion walked. Rivera then singled to score Rodriguez.
Northwest Florida State rounded out the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth. Gracie Pittman was hit by the pitch but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Gabriel Jones. Cox singled, and Jones scored on a passed ball.
In the second game of the day, McLennan fell to the No. 2 Chipola Indians 10-0 with Reese Taylor taking the loss in the circle. The Indians scored two runs in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth to secure the win. Campion, Trochim, Melayna Lopez, Adams and Rodriguez all had hits for McLennan.
McLennan ends the tournament with a 3-3 record and will return to action Friday with a home-opening doubleheader against Tyler at 1 p.m.
