Highlassies drop two games at Blinn
The McLennan Highlassies dropped both games of today's non-conference doubleheader with the Blinn Buccaneers in Brenham.
Blinn picked up the 14-6 run-rule victory over McLennan in the opener with Destiny Guerra taking the loss in the circle.
Blinn jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tori Alvarez-Lopez singled, stole second and third, and scored on a fly out by Amber Langston. Kimber Cortemelia and Maria Garcia both singled. Bailey Zibelin followed with a single to score Cortemelia.
Emeri Eubanks' solo home run in the second put McLennan on the board.
The Buccaneers added four runs in the second. Mackenzie Crews and Alvarez-Lopez both singled and scored on a single by Sarah Cedillo. Cedillo moved to second on a passed ball and Langston walked. Garcia followed with a double to score Cedillo and Langston.
Three more Blinn runs scored in the third. Anna Pisaro and Courtney Ogle both singled. Kindle Gault entered the game as a pinch runner for Ogle but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Crews. Alvarez-Lopez followed with a single to score Pisaro. Langston then singled to score Crews and Alvarez-Lopez.
The Highlassies added a run in the fourth as Eubanks doubled, moved to third on a single by Brooke Arnold and scored as Daniella Hill hit into a double play.
Four more McLennan runs scored in the fifth. Charley Avery walked but was caught stealing. Rebeca Fajardo tripled and scored on a double by Kaitlin Richards. Eubanks walked, and Arnold doubled to score Richards and Eubanks. Hill followed with a single to score Arnold.
Blinn sealed the run rule with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Langston and Cortemelia singled, and Garcia walked to load the bases. Zibelin followed with a single to score Langston, and Cortemelia scored on a passed ball. Pisaro singled to score Garcia, and Zibelin scored on an error. Pisaro then scored on a fly out by Ogle.
Blinn defeated McLennan 17-4 in five innings of the nightcap with Lindy Alexander taking the loss in the circle.
The Buccaneers scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Cedillo singled, and Langston and Garcia both walked, loading the bases. Zibelin doubled to score Cedillo and Langston. Pisaro and Lexi Harris also walked, bringing Garcia in to score.
McLennan got on the board with two runs in the top of the second as Alexander doubled and scored on Destiny Perry's home run.
Blinn added two runs in the bottom of the second. Alvarez-Lopez was hit by the pitch and scored on a Langston double. Cortemelia walked and Zibelin singled to score Langston.
The Highlassies scored a run in the third as Avery singled, stole second and scored on a single by Fajardo.
Two more Blinn runs scored in the third. Harris singled and scored on a double by Kelsey Lowke. Alvarez-Lopez then doubled to score Lowke.
McLennan's final run came in the top of the fourth. Perry singled and Destiny Sanchez walked. Avery followed with a double to score Perry.
Blinn broke the game open with 10 runs in the fourth. Pisaro, Harris and Lowke all singled to load the bases. Alvarez-Lopez reached on an error, allowing Pisaro to score. Cedillo singled to score Harris and Lowke. Alvarez-Lopez then scored on a wild pitch, and Langston walked. Cortemelia singled to score Cedillo. Garcia walked, and Langston scored on a fly out by Zibelin. Mayela Fernandez walked, loading the bases. A double by Harris scored all three runners. Lowke then singled to score Harris.
McLennan returns to conference play Wednesday, hosting Ranger for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
