McLennan Softball sweeps Odessa on the road
The McLennan Highlassies hit the road for the first time of the 2019 season and picked up a doubleheader sweep of the Odessa Lady Wranglers this afternoon in Odessa.
Emily Klanika got the 9-0 shutout in the circle in the opening game.
McLennan got on the board with one run in the top of the first as Kaelin Morkisch led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Genisa Marrero-Carter and scored on a sacrifice fly by Olivia Lantigua.
The Highlassies added a run in the fourth as Marrero-Carter doubled and scored on a double by Kaitlin Richards.
McLennan doubled its lead with two runs in the fifth. Arianna Perales singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindy Alexander but was out at third on a fielder's choice by Rebeca Fajardo. Morkisch drew a walk, and Marrero-Carter doubled to score Fajardo and Morkisch.
The Highlassies tacked on five runs in the top of the sixth to secure the run rule. Richards was hit by the pitch to start the inning. Sophie Wideman followed with a two-run homer. Perales drew a walk and Alexander singled. Pinch hitter Joani Kohlscheen doubled to score Perales and Alexander. Fajardo reentered the game as the runner at second. Marrero-Carter walked, and Lantigua singled to score Fajardo.
McLennan defeated Odessa 14-4 in the nightcap with Carla Torres getting the win in the circle.
The Highlassies began the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Perales, Richards and Wideman all singled to load the bases. Lantigua followed with a single to score Perales. Daniella Hill then singled to score Richards and Wideman.
Odessa's first two runs of the afternoon came in the bottom of the third. Morgyn Fulgham hit a solo home run. Becca Duran then singled and scored on a double by Illy Cisneros.
McLennan added two runs in the fifth. Wideman walked and Lantigua singled. Emeri Eubanks followed with a double to score Wideman, and Lantigua scored on a sacrifice fly by Hill.
The Lady Wranglers final two runs came in the bottom of the fifth. Fulgham was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning. Duran and Cisneros both walked to load the bases. July Hernandez then singled to score Fulgham and Duran.
The Highlassies broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Perales singled and scored on a home run by Richards. Lantigua singled and scored on another double by Eubanks. Fajardo then singled to score Eubanks. Kohlscheen walked and Morkisch became the pinch runner. Charley Avery also walked. Marrero-Carter was hit by the pitch, bringing Fajardo in to score.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with five runs in the top of the seventh. Richards doubled and Wideman singled. Destiny Perry followed with a single to score Richards. Morgan Hill came in as a pinch runner for Perry. Fajardo and Morkisch both singled, bringing Hill in to score. Avery then singled to score Fajardo.
McLennan returns to action tomorrow with a noon doubleheader at Howard in Big Spring.
