Highlassies dominate Hill on the diamond
The McLennan Highlassies shut out the Hill Lady Rebels in Wednesday's doubleheader with run-rule victories in both games.
The Highlassies took game one 8-0 in five innings with Victoria Vasquez in the circle.
McLennan scored its first two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Ariana Hernandez led off with a double, Genisa Marrero-Carter was safe at first on an error and Brittany Montoya walked, loading the bases. Breanna Heredia followed with a fielder's choice putting Hernandez out at the plate. Cassie Pavlas drew a walk, bringing Marrero-Carter in to score. Olivia Lantigua was then hit by the pitch to score Montoya.
Another Highlassie run scored in the third. Emeri Eubanks and Hernandez both walked. Eubanks then scored on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Marrero-Carter and Montoya.
McLennan secured the run rule with five runs in the fourth inning. Lantigua, Kaitlin Richards and Eubanks all singled to load the bases. Marrero-Carter was safe at first on an error, bringing Lantigua in to score, but Richards was out at the plate. Montoya walked to reload the bases. Breanna Heredia followed with a grand slam.
The Highlassies' domination continued in the nightcap as they defeated the Lady Rebels 9-0 with Emily Klanika in the circle.
McLennan scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Pavlas singled and Lantigua was safe on an error. Richards followed with a single to score Pavlas, and Hernandez drew a walk. A sacrifice fly by Marrero-Carter brought Lantigua in to score. Montoya then doubled to score Richards and Hernandez.
Four more Highlassie runs scored in the second. Charley Avery and Pavlas both singled and scored on a triple by Lantigua. Richards followed with a two-run homer.
The final McLennan run came in the bottom of the fourth inning as Richards tripled and scored on a single by Marrero-Carter.
McLennan continues conference play Saturday, traveling to Temple for a noon doubleheader.
