McLennan and Blinn split softball doubleheader
The McLennan Highlassies and Blinn Buccaneers split today's doubleheader at Bosque River Ballpark.
Blinn defeated McLennan 2-0 in game one with Victoria Vasquez taking the loss in the circle for the Highlassies.
Both of the Buccaneers' runs came in the top of the fourth inning as Gabriela Gomez singled and scored on a home run by Georgina Gonzales.
McLennan needed extra innings to come from behind to defeat Blinn 7-6 in the nightcap. Vasquez picked up the win in the circle.
Blinn began the scoring on Sydney Gutierrez's home run in the top of the first.
The Buccaneers added three runs in the top of the fourth. Sarah Cedillo and Courtney Ogle drew back-to-back walks. Lauren Coerver followed with a triple to score Cedillo and Ogle. Coerver then scored on a single by Amber Langston.
Another Blinn run came in the top of the sixth. Gomez led off with a walk but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Gonzales. Gonzales then stole second and scored on a double by Langston.
McLennan finally got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Ariana Hernandez doubled, moved to third on a single by Breanna Heredia and stole home.
The Highlassies scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Mayra Davila singled and Hernandez was safe at first on an error. Emeri Eubanks followed with a three-run homer. Genisa Marrero-Carter made it back-to-back home runs for McLennan to tie the game.
With daylight running out, the teams moved to the international tiebreaker rule and put a runner on second to start each half inning. With Cedillo at second, Coerver was hit by the pitch, and Langston drew a walk to load the bases. Cedillo then came in to score on a passed ball.
McLennan tied the game again with another run in the bottom of the eighth. Cassie Pavlas began the inning on second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Lantigua. Pavlas then scored on a single by Richards.
The Highlassies sealed the win in the bottom of the ninth inning as Marrero-Carter scored on a double by Brittany Montoya.
