Highlassies fall to Wallace State
The McLennan Highlassies fell to the Wallace State Lions 6-4 in the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship in St. George, Utah. Kayleigh Williams took the loss in the circle for the Highlassies.
Wallace State began the scoring with one run in the top of the first as Sarah Ellen Battles drew a walk and scored on a double by Katie Parr.
McLennan took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. Haley Webre singled and moved to second on an error. Angelina Camacho reached first safely on another error, moving Webre to third. Dariann Resendez singled, scoring Webre. Marisa Flores followed with a double to score Camacho. Victoria Gonzales then singled to score Resendez and Flores.
The Lions stole the win with five runs in the top of the seventh. With two outs recorded, Amber Hammonds singled and Olivia Royal drew a walk. Taylor Beshears followed with a fielder's choice, but Hammonds beat the throw to third to load the bases. Battles followed with a single and advanced around to third on a Highlassie throwing error, bringing Hammonds, Royal and Beshears in to score. Molli Garcia followed with the two-run homer.
The Highlassies will face Indian Hills at 2:30 p.m. (MST) Thursday in an elimination game.
