Highlassies go 4-0 in McLennan Classic
The McLennan Highlassies picked up two wins on the opening day of the McLennan Classic at Bosque River Ballpark.
McLennan opened the tournament with a 9-6 win over the Galveston Whitecaps. Ashley Mills picked up the win in the circle.
Galveston began the scoring with three runs in the top of the first inning. Kyla Lockley reached first on a bunt, Leslie McClinton was safe on an error and Mariah Garcia walked to load the bases. Hannah Dowdell followed with a single to score Lockley and McClinton. Courtney Fisher drew a walk. Brittany Dworaczyk followed with a fielder's a choice to score Garcia.
The Whitecaps added two runs in the third. Garcia led off with a double and Dowdell reached on a bunt. Garcia stole home and Dowdell scored on a bunt single by Fisher.
Galveston's final run came in the top of the fourth as Lockley singled, moved to second on the walk of McClinton, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Garcia.
McLennan exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Kaymee Gooden singled and Morgan Hill walked. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cheyenne Bell. Summer Dolezel reached safely on an error, bringing Gooden in to score. Ashley Silva walked, loading the bases. Danielle Gregory followed with a double to score Hill, Dolezel and Silva. Amber Mills drew a walk and Aubri Hockenbury singled, bringing Gregory in to score. Andrea Gonzales also drew a walk. Hill then singled to score Amber Mills.
The Highlassies took the lead with two runs in the fifth. Dolezel walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Silva and moved to third on a passed ball. Amber Mills reached safely on an error, bringing Dolezel in to score. Hockenbury followed with a double, moving Mills to third. Mills then scored on a passed ball.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with one run in the bottom of the sixth as Hill singled and scored on a double by Bell.
The Highlassies defeated the Kilgore Lady Rangers 4-3 in the second game of the day with Hill getting the win.
The Highlassies began the scoring with one run in the bottom of the second as Hill walked, stole second and scored on a single by Silva.
McLennan added three runs in the third. Hockenbury singled and Gonzales reached on an error. Hockenbury came in to score on a bunt single by Gooden. Bell followed with a single to score Gonzales and Gooden.
Kilgore got on the board with one run in the top of the fourth. Haley McCullers and Lexi Lopez drew back-to-back walks and advanced on a ground out by Lashawnda Jones. McCullers then scored on a ground out by Mariah Goguen.
The Highlassies scored one run in the bottom of the fourth as Amber Mills walked, stole second and scored on a single by Gonzales.
The Lady Rangers scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Bianca Van Vlerak doubled and Jones singled. Both runners scored on a single by Marisa Ledkins.
McLennan's final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Gregory doubled and Hockenbury singled. Gonzales followed with a single, scoring Gregory.
The Highlassies closed out the Classic with two wins on Saturday.
McLennan defeated Kilgore 7-6 in eight innings with Hill picking up the win. Bell led the Highlassies at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBIs. Hill was 2-3 with two RBIs and Gonzales was also 2-3. Gooden picked up two RBIs on one hit and Dolezel recorded an RBI.
The Highlassies closed out the tournament with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Galveston. Gregory was hot at the plate, going 2-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. Amber Mills was 3-4 and Hockenbury recorded a double and two RBIs. Hill and Gooden both went 1-3 with an RBI. Bell picked up two RBIs.
McLennan returns to action to Wednesday, traveling to Houston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at San Jacinto.
