Highlanders fall at Weatherford
The McLennan Highlanders fell to the Weatherford Coyotes 82-72 on the road this afternoon in Weatherford.
It was a slow-paced first half between the Highlanders and Coyotes. Weatherford opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers from Jared Washington. A pair of jumpers from Antwone Gonzales and Nick Shogbonyo followed by a 3-pointer from the corner by Jaden Juarez gave McLennan the 7-6 lead with 15:55 to play in the first half. The two teams traded baskets and the lead until the game was tied at 20 with 6:10 remaining. McLennan built a six-point lead at 28-22 with 3:17 to play before the half. Weatherford responded with a 12-0 run to lead 34-28. Shogbonyo then went 2-3 from the free throw line in the final seconds to make it a 34-30 Coyote lead at the half.
Weatherford opened the second halve on a 5-0 run to push the lead to nine, 39-30. The Coyotes stretched the lead to 12 at 47-35 before McLennan began to rally. The Highlanders put together a 16-3 run highlighted by 3-pointers by Gonzales, Daylon Dickerson, Landon Anderson and Shogbonyo to take the 51-50 lead with 11:47 to play. Weatherford took the lead once again and built a six-point lead at 61-55 before a 6-0 run by Shogbonyo tied the game at 61 with just a tick under six minutes to play. The Coyotes pulled away once again, leading by 10 at 74-64 with 2:38 to go. Dickerson stepped up with a 5-0 run for the Highlanders to cut the lead to five, 74-69, but that would be as close as they could get.
