Highlanders defeat Coastal bend with major comeback
The McLennan Highlanders rallied from an eight-run deficit in the seventh inning to get the 19-8 run-rule win over the Coastal Bend Cougars in San Marcos. Drake Threadgill picked up the win on the mound.
The Cougars began the scoring with four runs in the top of the first. Jaden Deshautelle walked, and Harold Laracuente hit by the pitch. Matt Mendez also walked, loading the bases. Derek Ruiz walked to score Deshautelle. Lukas Luna singled to score Laracuente, and Mendez scored on an error. Ruiz then scored on a ground out by Luis Turmero.
Two more Coastal Bend runs scored in the second. Trey Bauman walked and Deshautelle reached on an error. Deshautelle stole second, and Bauman scored on a ground out by Harold Laracuente. Mendez was hit by the pitch, and Deshautelle scored on a fly out by Derek Ruiz.
The final two Cougar run came in the top of the sixth. Gabe Camarillo singled and Deshautelle walked. Laracuente reached on an error, loading the bases. Ruiz then singled to score Camarillo and Deshautelle.
McLennan exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead. Brody Chyr walk, Ty Waid singled and Owen Egan walked, loading the bases. Brecken Menuet doubled to score Chyr and Waid, and Egan scored on a sacrifice fly by Sherman Johnson. Spencer Butt walked, and Menuet scored on a sac fly by Marcus Smith. Butt advanced on an error, and Daniel Harden walked. Deiten Lachance followed with a three-run homer. Chyr and Waid both walked and scored on a three-run homer by Egan. Menuet walked and Johnson was hit by the pitch. Both runners stole a base, and Butt walked to load the bases. Marcus Smith then walked to score Menuet.
The Highlanders secured the run rule with eight runs in the eighth. Lachance was hit by the pitch. Cage McCloud and Waid both walked, loading the bases. Lachance scored on a passed ball, and Egan walked to reload the bases. Owen Smith singled to score McCloud, and Johnson doubled to score Waid and Egan. Owen Smith then scored on a sac fly by Butt. Marcus Smith walked, and Walker Freeman followed with the walk-off three-run homer.
