Highlanders complete series sweep of Hill
The McLennan Highlanders finished the four-game series sweep of the Hill Rebels with a pair of run-rule victories this afternoon in Hillsboro.
McLennan took game on 16-6 in five innings with Owen Egan getting the win on the mound.
The Highlanders took control with six runs in the top of the first inning. Sherman Johnson doubled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Spencer Butt. Marcus Smith walked and Daniel Harden followed with a three-run homer. AJ Goytia walked and Cage McCloud hit a two-run homer.
The Rebels scored three in the bottom of the inning. Samuel York walked and Dean Poenitzsch singled. Bruce Deason singled to score York. Poenitzsch scored on an error, and Tanner Cooper singled to score Deason.
McLennan added five runs in the second. Johnson, Butt and Marcus Smith all walked. A fielder's choice by Harden scored Johnson, and put Marcus Smith out at second. Goytia walked, and Butt scored on a passed ball. McClane Helton also walked to load the bases. Lachance walked, scoring Harden, and Goytia scored on a fielder's choice by McCloud. Owen Smith then singled to score Helton.
Hill scored two in the bottom of the third. Poenitzsch walked but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Deason. Cooper followed with a two-run homer.
The Highlanders responded with four runs in the top of the fourth. McCloud waked and scored on another double by Johnson. Butt followed with a two-run homer, and Harden hit a solo home run.
The Rebel's final run came with Lane Walton's homer in the bottom of the fourth.
McLennan sealed the run rule with Lachance's home run to lead off the top of the fifth.
John Carmichael picked up the 11-1 win in the nightcap.
Hill's only run came in the bottom of the first. Aiden Hatton walked and Walton singled. Hatton then scored on a ground out by Poenitzsch.
McLennan took the lead with six runs in the second. Helton and Lachance both singled, and McCloud walked to load the bases. Johnson then doubled to score Helton and Lachance, and Butt followed with a three-run homer. Marcus Smith then hit a solo home run.
Three more Highlander runs score in the fourth. Johnson led off with a home run, and Butt walked. Butt advanced on a passed ball and scored on a double by Harden. Harden advanced on a wild pitch, and Goytia reached on an error, scoring Harden.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with solo home runs by Lachance and Owen Smith in the fifth.
