Highlanders drop conferencing doubleheader to Temple
The fifth-ranked McLennan Highlanders dropped both games of today's conference-opening doubleheader with the Temple Leopards at Bosque River Ballpark.
Temple defeated McLennan 5-4 in the opener with Alex Wallace taking the loss on the mound.
The Highlanders began the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. Spencer Butt and Daniel Harden were both hit by the pitch. Jackson Irons then doubled to score Butt.
Another Highlander run scored in the second. Owen Smith singled and Butt reached on an error. Harden walked, loading the bases. Smith then scored on a sacrifice fly by Deiten Lachance.
Temple get on the board with a run in the third. Kash Millar doubled and Sage Sanders singled. Kolvin Davis then singled to score Millar.
Four more Leopard runs scored in the fifth. Kolvin Davis singled and advanced around to third on an error. Lance Cantrell then doubled to score Davis. Andrew Ermis singled, and Kade Davis followed with the three-run homer.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with two runs in the sixth. Marcus Smith walked and Sherman Johnson doubled, both scoring on a single by Butt.
Temple defeated the Highlanders 6-5 in the nightcap with Kadyn Leon taking the loss on the mound.
The Leopards scored one in the top of the first. Cantrell and Ermis both singled. Cantrell advanced on a fly out and stole home.
Another Temple run scored in the second. Davin Brazzle was hit by the pitch but out at second on a fielder's choice by Ryder Rutledge. Jackson Todd singled and Sage Sanders walked. Davis then walked, scoring Rutledge.
Leopard added another run with Davis' home run in the third.
The final three Temple runs came in the top of the sixth. Todd singled, Millar waked and Sanders was hit by the pitch. Davis doubled to score all three runners.
All five McLennan runs came in the bottom of the seventh. Marcus Smith doubled and Butt singled. Harden walked to load the bases. Irons was hit by the pitch, scoring Smith. Lachance walked to score Butt, and AJ Goytia walked to score Harden. Irons then scored on a sacrifice fly by Waid, and Walker Freeman singled to score Lachance.
