Highlanders walk-off Howard
After sitting out multiple weather delays that postponed first pitch until 1:39 a.m., the McLennan Highlanders defeated the Howard Hawks 11-1 in walk-off fashion on opening day of the Region V Tournament at Bosque River Ballpark.
The Highlanders began the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first. Daniel Harden singled and Mac Rose doubled. Aidan Kuni followed with a double scoring Harden, and Sam Flores' fielder's choice put Kuni out at second. Owen Smith then doubled to score Rose and Flores, and Walker Freeman singled to score Smith.
Four more McLennan runs scored in the third. Deiten Lachance doubled and scored on a double by Flores. Flores stole third and scored on a single by Freeman. Landon Underhill walked, and Harden singled to score Freeman. Rose walked, and Kuni was hit by the pitch, scoring Underhill.
The Hawks only run came in the top of the fourth. Allen Hernandez walked and Christian Gutierrez doubled. Tyler Large followed with a singled, scoring Hernandez.
The Highlanders added another run in the fifth. Kuni was hit by the pitch and Lachance singled. Flores then single to score Kuni.
McLennan sealed the run rule in the sixth. Freeman led off the inning with a single, and Brecken Menuet came through with the walk-off two-run homer.
