Highlanders rally to defeat Midland
The McLennan Highlanders outscored the Midland Chaparrals 19-10 in this afternoon's non-conference contest in Abilene with Kyndall Cassidy getting the win on the mound.
The Highlanders began the scoring with one run in the first. Deiten Lachance singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Sam Flores then doubled to score Lachance.
The Chaparrals took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Matt Guthmiller, Jake Martinez and Justin Rumfield all singled. Brock Tijerina singled to score Guthmiller and Martinez, and Rumfield scored on a sacrifice fly by Xavier Melendez. Tijernia advanced to third on a ground out by Kyle Lewis and scored on a single by Parker Ibrahimi.
Another Midland run scored in the second. Trace Holcomb and Guthmiller both singled, and Martinez walked to load the bases. Holcomb then scored on a wild pitch.
McLennan added two runs in the third. Daniel Harden reached first and advanced to second on an error. Aidan Kuni singled to score Harden. Flores then singled to score Kuni.
The Highlanders exploded for 11 runs in the fifth inning. Brecken Menuet walked, Harden was hit by the pitch and Kuni reached on an error, loading the bases. Flores also reached on an error, scoring Menuet, and Harden scored on a sacrifice bunt by Marcus Smith. Gavyn Jones walked and Owen Smith was hit by the pitch, scoring Kuni. Flores scored on a wild pitch, and Xander McAfee walked to reload the bases. Menuet doubled to clear the bases. Harden was hit by the pitch and Kuni reached on an error, loading the bases again. Lachance singled to score Menuet and Harden. Flores then doubled to score Kuni and Lachance.
The Chaparrals put another run on the board in the sixth as Ibrahimi double, moved to third on a ground out by Dariel Rios and scored on a sacrifice fly by Holcomb.
McLennan put a run on the board in the seventh. Harden led off with a double and Kuni walked. Lachance then singled to score Harden.
Midland responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Rumfield doubled and Tijerina was hit by the pitch. Melendez singled, and Rumfield and Tijerina both scored on an error. Melendez then scored on a ground out by Lewis.
Three Highlander runs scored in the eighth. O. Smith and McAfee both walked. O. Smith stole third and home. Harden followed with a two-run homer.
The Chaparrals scored one in the eighth as Guthmiller walked and scored on a double by Rumfield.
