Highlanders sweep No. 10 Grayson
The McLennan Highlanders swept today's doubleheader with Grayson in Sherman to win the conference series three games to one over the 10th-ranked Vikings.
McLennan shut out Grayson 7-0 in the opener with Brady Rose getting the win over on the mound.
The Highlanders scored four runs in the top of the third. Miguel Santos singled and Garrett Martin was hit by the pitch. Alex Lopez singled to score Santos. Dominic Tamez followed with a three-run homer.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with three runs in the fourth. Hank Bard singled and Ben Rosengard drew a walk. Greer reached on a drop third strike and Bard scored on the error. Martin then doubled to score Rosengard and Greer.
The Highlanders defeated the Vikings 10-4 in the nightcap with Gray Harrison getting the win on the mound and Landry Wideman picking up the save.
McLennan took the lead with three runs in the first. Santos led off with a single, Greer reached on an error and Lopez walked to load the bases. Santos scored on a passed ball and Greer scored on another error. Tamez then singled to score Lopez.
Grayson scored one run in the bottom of the inning as Wade Elliott walked, moved to second on a Blake Rambusch singled, stole third and scored on an error.
Two more Highlander runs scored in the third. Martin singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Tamez. Jackson singled and Tamez scored on an overthrow.
McLennan added three runs in the fourth. Rosengard doubled and Jaylen Williams walked. Santos doubled to score Rosengard, and Williams scored as Martin reached on an error. Lopez walked and Santos scored on a sacrifice fly by Tamez.
The Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Davis Powell and Will Quillen were both hit by the pitch and advanced on a wild pitch. Powell scored on a sacrifice fly by Elliott, and Rambusch walked. Yanluis Ortiz then singled to score Quillen.
The final Grayson run came in the sixth Quillen singled but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Elliott. Rambusch followed with a fielder's choice, putting Elliott out at second. Rambusch advanced around to third on a wild pitch and passed ball, and scored on single by Ortiz.
The Highlanders added another run in the seventh as Rosengard walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Williams, advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Santos.
Santos' home run in the top of the ninth was the final McLennan run.
The Highlanders continue conference play Wednesday, traveling to Ranger for a noon doubleheader.
