Highlanders dominate Whitecaps in Huntsville
The McLennan Highlanders dominated the Galveston Whitecaps this afternoon in Huntsville, coming away with a 15-4 run-rule victory. Dawson Sweatt picked up the win on the mound.
McLennan jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. Jimmy Crooks singled and Caleb Balgaard drew a walk. Brett Squires followed with a three-run homer.
The Highlanders exploded for seven runs in the second. Hank Bard singled and Jaylen Williams drew a walk. Ryan Neitsch's fielder's choice put Williams out at second. Jalen Battles followed with a three-run homer. Balgaard singled and moved to second on an error. Garrett Martin then singled to score Balgaard. Squires with hit by the pitch and Miguel Santos singled, loading the bases. Bard then doubled to clear the bases.
McLennan added a run in the fourth as Squires doubled and scored on a single by Bard.
Galveston got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Nicoll doubled, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Josh Meyer then singled, moved around to third on a single by Saylion Dunlap and scored on a single by Chaesten Chon.
Squires' solo home run in the sixth put the Highlanders up 12-2.
Galveston's final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth as Dunlap and Chon both singled and scored on a double by Hayden Blair.
McLennan sealed the run rule with three runs in the top of the seventh. Battles and Crooks both singled and scored on a single by Matthew Miles. Miles then moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Santos.
The Highlanders begin conference play Thursday, hosting North Central for a noon doubleheader at Bosque River Ballpark.
