Highlanders drop two at Navarro
The McLennan Highlanders dropped both games of today's doubleheader with the Navarro Bulldogs in Corsicana.
Navarro defeated the Highlanders 1-0 in game one with Riggs Threadgill taking the loss on the mound. The Bulldogs scored the only run in the bottom of the first. Riley Lambert led off with a single by and Ethan Ruiz drew a walk. Both runners advanced on a ground out by Cash Rugely. Lambert then scored on a ground by Stacey Bailey.
McLennan scored seven runs in game two but it wasn't enough as they fell to Navarro 11-7. Dawson Sweat took the loss on the mound.
Navarro began the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first as Weston Symes was hit by the pitch, moved to second on an Ethan Ruiz walk, advanced to third on a fly out by Bailey and scored on a single by Alex Vergara.
The Bulldogs added five runs in the third. Symes and Ruiz both walked, and Rugely was safe on an error to load the bases. Bailey and Vergara also walked, bringing Symes and Ruiz in to score. Connor Allen walked to score Rugely; Chad Ricker walked to score Bailey; and Tallon Heine walked to score Vergara.
Two more Navarro runs scored in the fourth. Rugely and Bailey both walked. Vergara singled to score Rugely, and Bailey was out at third. Woods walked and Allen singled to load the bases. Vergara then score on a fly out by Ricker.
The Bulldogs added another two runs in the fifth. Ruiz singled and scored on a double by Rugely. Rugely then moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Bailey.
McLennan got on the board with five runs in the top of the sixth. Brett Squires walked, Garrett Martin was hit by the pitch and Miguel Santos walked, loading the bases. Hank Bard singled to score Squires. Nick Pierce singled to score Martin, and Santos was out at the plate. Jimmy Crooks was safe at first and moved to second on an error, bringing Bard in to score. Jalen Battles also reached on an error, allowing Pierce to score. Caleb Balgaard was hit by the pitch, and Squires walked to score Crooks.
Navarro's final run came in the bottom of the sixth as Allen walked, advanced around to third on a single by Symes and scored on a passed ball.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with two runs in the top of the eighth. Battles singled and Seth Morrow walked, both scoring on a double by Balgaard.
McLennan returns to action Saturday, hosting New Mexico for a noon doubleheader.
