Six Highlanders selected for All-Star Weekend
Six sophomore Highlanders will represent the McLennan Baseball program in the Texas-New Mexico Junior College Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Weekend activities Sept. 27-28 at Abilene Christian University.
Pitchers Tanner Brooks and Mason Hilton will be joined by shortstop Jalen Battles, third baseman Garrett Martin, first baseman Cole Moore and outfielder Brett Squires on the Region V North Squad.
Brooks, a right hander from Houston, appeared in 10 games for the Highlanders as a freshman, recording a 5-3 record on the mound with 37 strikeouts and a 3.18 ERA (second on team) in 34 innings.
A right hander from Weatherford, Hilton appeared in 13 games last season, recording a 3-3 record with 45 strikeouts and 6.14 ERA in 36.2 innings.
Battles, from San Antonio, appeared in all 57 of the Highlanders' games last season. He recorded a .320 batting average with 17 doubles (team high), four triples (tied for team high), six home runs, 42 RBIs and six stolen bases (tied for second on team). Battles was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillips in the 34th round of the MLB Draft.
Denver, Colorado native Martin also appeared in all 57 of the Highlanders games, recording a .335 batting average (second on team) with eight doubles, four triples (tied for team lead), nine home runs (second on team) and 47 RBIs (third on team). He was a NJCAA All-Academic Third-Team honoree.
Moore, from Georgetown, also appeared in all 57 of the Highlanders games, recording a .313 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs (third on team) and 56 RBIs (team high).
Squires, a Grapevine native, appeared in 56, recording a .286 batting average with 12 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs (team high) and 48 RBIs (second on team). He was a NJCAA All-Academic Second-Team honoree.
Battles, Martin, Moore and Squires were all second-team all-conference selections in the spring. They along with Brooks and Hilton will play for the Region V North squad at 6:15 p.m. Friday and 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Abilene.
