Highlanders complete series sweep at Midland
The McLennan Highlanders picked up a pair of wins over the Midland Chaparrals on the road this afternoon to complete the three-game series sweep of the Chaps.
McLennan won the opening game of the doubleheader 3-1 with Alex DeLeon getting the win on the mound and Trevor Munsch picking up the save.
Brett Squires' solo home run in the second put McLennan on the board.
The Highlanders added two runs in the third. Ryan Bishop singled and Jalen Battles doubled. Aidan Shepardson followed with a single to score Bishop. Cole Moore followed with a fielder's choice, putting Shepardson out and allowing Battles to score.
Midland's only run came in the bottom of the fourth as Garrett Wilkinson singled, moved to second on a single by Ethan Mann, advanced to third on Fernie Zubia's walk and scored on a wild pitch.
McLennan took the nightcap 11-9 with Mason Hilton picking up the win.
The Highlanders scored a run in the first as Battles singled, moved to second on an error, stole third and scored on another Midland error.
Midland tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first as Mason Weathers singled, moved to second on Deyland Pigford's walk, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground out by Garrett Wilkinson.
McLennan broke the game open with seven runs in the fourth. Jordan Yeatts singled and Matthew Miles walked. Battles then singled to score Yeatts, and Battles was out on a fielder's choice by Shepardson. Moore singled to score Miles, and Santos walked. Shepardson and Moore scored on a single by Squires. Garrett Martin followed with a three-run homer.
Yeatts' solo shot in the fifth increased the Highlanders' lead to 9-1.
The Chaps added two runs in the fifth. Zubia bunted, Dakota Champagne singled and Weathers walked to load the bases. Wilkinson then singled to score Zubia and Champagne.
McLennan added another run in the sixth as Martin singled, stole second, and scored on a single by Jaylen Williams.
Another Highlander run crossed the plate in the seventh as Miles walked, stole second and scored on a double by Battles.
Midland scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Will Harrison and Weathers both singled. Pigford then doubled to score Harrison, and Weathers scored on a fly out by Grant Fanara. Mann and Jordan Billups walked to load the bases. Pigford then scored on a passed ball.
The Chaps rounded out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Pigford walked and Mann singled. Both runners scored on a Billups home run.
McLennan will compete in the San Jacinto Tournament of Champions Friday and Saturday.
