Highlanders sweep Angelina
The McLennan Highlanders swept Wednesday's doubleheader with the Angelina Roadrunners at Bosque River Ballpark.
The McLennan bats were on fire in the first game as the Highlanders run-ruled the Roadrunners 14-3.
The Highlanders began the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Dimas Ojeda singled. James Rudkin followed with a home run over the left field fence. Brandon Grudzielanek singled, Kirby McGuire doubled and Braxton Wilks drew a walk to load the bases. Noah McGowan then walked, bringing Grudzielanek in to score.
Angelina got on the board with one run in the second as Brayson Longman tripled and scored on a ground out by Dillon Menville.
McLennan exploded for seven runs in the second. Will Fox led off with a double, Tucker Johnson was hit by the pitch and Ojeda singled to load the bases. Rudkin followed with a single to score Fox. Johnson scored on a fly out by Grudzielanek. McGuire followed with a double, scoring Ojeda. Wilks then singled to score Rudkin and McGuire. McGowan walked. Mason George then doubled, bringing Wilks and McGowan in to score.
The Highlanders added one run in the third as McGuire singled, stole second and scored on double by Wilks.
The Roadrunners' final two runs came in the top of the fourth as Menville doubled and scored on a home run by JoJo Valencia.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Fox walked and scored on a triple by Johnson. Ojeda then tripled to score Johnson and came in to score on a passed ball.
The Highlanders defeated the Roadrunners 5-4 in the nightcap.
McLennan scored one run in the bottom of the first. Fox was hit by the pitch. Johnson and Rudkin both singled to load the bases. McGuire followed with a fielder's choice, scoring Fox.
Angelina's Alex Hrinevich tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
The Roadrunners took the lead with a run in the fifth. Longman was safe at first on a Highlander error and advanced to second on a ground out by Cole Angelle. Garrett Hrozek then singled to score Longman.
Angelina extended the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. Mitch Henshaw drew a walk and Hrinevich singled. Chris Estrada was given the intentional walk to load the bases. Longman then singled to score Henshaw and Hrinevich.
The Highlanders scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win. Grudzielanek singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brady Sullivan followed with a single to score Grudzielanek. Wilks drew a walk and Fox singled, scoring Sullivan. Johnson followed with a walk-off triple, bringing Wilks and Fox in to score and win the game.
McLennan will host Howard for a three-game series this weekend beginning with game one at 2 p.m. on Friday.
