McLennan, Temple baseball split
The McLennan Highlanders and Temple Leopards split Sunday's conference doubleheader in Temple.
The Leopards needed 10 innings to defeat the Highlanders 14-13 in game one. Miles Manning took the loss on the mound.
McLennan scored four runs in the top of the fourth. Evan Williams singled, Matt Campbell doubled and Max Hogan was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Andrew Rhodes followed with a double, scoring Williams and Campbell. Hogan came in to score on a groundout by Zach Gonzalez. Rhodes then scored on a fly out by Trevor Podsednik.
The Highlanders added one run in the fifth as Manning singled, moved to second on the walk of Williams and scored on a single by Campbell.
McLennan extended the lead to 8-0 with three runs in the sixth. Podsednik singled and scored on a home run by Sydney Daley. Manning followed with a double and scored on a single by Williams.
Temple scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Adam Ortega singled, Matt Valdez was hit by the pitch and Blake Kopetsky was safe on an error to load the bases. Ortega scored on a wild pitch. Cory Raley then tripled to score Valdez and Kopetsky. Tucker Pennell drew a walk. A wild pitch brought Raley in to score and advanced Pennell to second. Ryan King then singled to score Pennell.
The Leopards tied the game with three runs in the seventh. Valdez was hit by the pitch and Kopetsky walked. Pennell singled to score Valdez. Kopetsky and Pennell both scored on a double by King.
The Highlanders took the lead with five runs in the top of the 10th inning. Rhodes led off with a solo home run. Gonzalez doubled and Podsednik singled. Mason George hit into a double play, putting himself and Podesdnik out but bringing Gonzalez in to score. Daley singled and stole second. Manning was safe at first and advanced to second on an error by the right fielder, bringing Daley in to score. Williams then singled to score Manning. Campbell followed with a double to score Williams.
Temple sealed the win with six runs in the bottom of the 10th. Ortega led off with a double, Valdez was hit by the pitch and Kopetsky was safe on an error to load the bases. Raley followed with a grand slam. Justin Freeman was hit by the pitch and scored on a double by Zach Silvers. Austin Bishoff then singled to score Freeman and end the game.
The Highlanders bounced back to defeat the Leopards 7-3 in the nightcap with Kody Hessemer picking up the complete-game win.
Hogan put McLennan on the board with a solo home run in the top of the first.
Temple tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first as Kopetsky tripled and scored on a single by Raley.
The Highlanders took the lead with six runs in the second. Zac Valenzuela led off with a home run. Podsednik and Tanner Fritsch were both safe on back-to-back errors by the Temple shortstop with Podsednik scoring on the second error. Dalton Rodriguez followed with a double. Williams then singled to score Fritsch, and Campbell singled to score Rodriguez. Hogan then singled to score Williams, and Campbell scored on a fly out by Rhodes.
The Leopards final two runs came in the bottom of the fourth. Pennell led off with a double and Ortega was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on a balk. J.K. Bickham then singled to score Pennell and Ortega.
