McLennan women earn conference awards
The eighth-ranked McLennan women's basketball squad snagged a handful of North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference award.
First-year head coach Candice Thomas was named the Co-Coach of the Year for leading the squad to the first conference championship in 18 years. She shares the honor with Jeff Allen of Collin. Collin and McLennan finished with identical 14-2 records but McLennan claimed the top seed by winning both games against the Cougars.
Guard Mersadez Nephew and forward Aniya Williams, both sophomores, were All-Conference selections. Nephew, from Willis, averaged 19.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game in conference play. Williams, from Marlin averaged 12.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game.
Sophomore guard Aysia Ward was named the Defensive Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention honoree. The Dallas native is averaged 8.9 points per game in conference play along with 8.8 rebounds 2.1 assists 1.3 blocks and 1.8 steals. Alaina Payne was also an Honorable Mention selection. Payne, a Fort Worth native, averaged 8.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists steals per game.
