McLennan holds off Angelina in Lufkin
The McLennan women kept their winning streak alive with a 69-54 win over the Angelina Roadrunners in the final game of the opening day of the Angelina Classic in Lufkin.
McLennan started the game on a 6-0 run with Aniya Williams, Aysia Ward and Mersadez Nephew all scoring. Angelina was held scoreless for the first three minutes of play before India McMahon hit a 3-pointer to put the Roadrunners on the board. McLennan led by four, 13-9, with 3:33 to go in the first, and used a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half to make it an 11-point advantage, 20-9. McLennan pushed the lead to make it a 12-point lead but Angelina ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to cut it to eight at the end of the quarter, 24-16.
Angelina heated up from behind the arc in the second quarter. McLennan led by 11, 32-21 with 6:45 on the clock when the Roadrunners began to rally. Carly Gates hit three 3-pointers and Alicia Rivera-Scott hit one as part of the rally that that tied the game at 38 with just over a minute to go before the half. McLennan ended the quarter on a 5-0 run composed of a 3-pointer from Bevley and a layup by Niyah Johnson to make it 43-38 McLennan at the break.
The offensive rhythm slowed down for both teams in the second half. McLennan led 50-46 with 1:26 on the clock and pulled away with an 11-0 run to lead 61-46 going to the fourth. Gates hit a 3-pointer for Angelina to start the fourth but the Roadrunners couldn't steal any momentum.
Saneea Bevley led with 24 points and Aniya Williams added 14.
