Highlassies breeze by Blinn
The McLennan Highlassies went on the road Monday evening to pick up an impressive 72-61 victory over the Blinn Buccaneers in Brenham. The win moves the Highlassies to a 5-2 record on the season.
Kyler Wyatt put Blinn on the board with a drive in the lane 30 seconds into the first quarter. McLennan responded with a Chiqueria Cook jumper with 8:36 to go in the first, igniting a 12-0 run to give the Highlassies their first double-digit lead of the contest. The Highlassies' defense held the Buccaneers to just eight points in the opening period as they jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter.
Highlassie Jaylonn Walker was on fire from 3-pointer range in the second quarter. The sophomore from Calvert drained four of her five long balls in the frame to propel McLennan to the 35-20 advantage at intermission.
The Highlassies led by as many as 19, 49-30 with 3:07 to play in the third quarter but Blinn wasn't backing down. The Buccaneers used an 11-2 run to cut the McLennan lead to 10 with 34 seconds left in third. KeeKee Nowlin went 1-2 from the free throw line and banked in a put back bucket to extend the lead back to 13 going into the final quarter, 54-41.
McLennan kept the intensity up in the fourth quarter. Blinn pulled within nine points on a Wyatt 3-pointer with one minute to play but couldn't get any closer.
Walker led the Highlassies with 23 points and Mitchell added 16.
