McLennan’s Mitchell earn WBCA All-America honors
McLennan Community College women's basketball guard Velma Mitchell has been named a 2017 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Junior/Community College Coaches' All-American.
Mitchell, a freshman from Rockdale, was named the North Texas Junior College Athletics Conference (NTJCAC) Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, a first-team all-conference and an all-region selection. Mitchell averaged 17.0 points per game to lead the Highlassies and was the best in the conference.
Joining Mitchell as All-American selections are: Naomi Davenport (Trinity Valley Community College); Taylor Emery (Gulf Coast State College); Japonica James (Tallahassee Community College); Tierra McGowan (Rock Valley College); Jeryn Reese (Owens Community College); Lanay Rodney (Monroe Community College); Blaysen Varnadoe (Santa Ana College); Szonja Vukov (Highland Community College, Kansas); and Lawriell Wilson (Tallahassee Community College).
"The 10 members of the 2017 WBCA Junior/Community College Coaches' All-America Team are well-deserving of this recognition, and the WBCA congratulates them for their accomplishments this season," said Danielle Donehew, executive director of the WBCA. "These young women have worked to elevate themselves and their teams to an elite level, and through their exceptional talents on the basketball court, they have lifted the women's game."
