Mitchell, three other Highlassies snag conference accolades
Freshman phenom Velma Mitchell and three other McLennan Highlassies were named to the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference All-Conference Awards list for their outstanding performances this season.
Mitchell, a guard from Rockdale, was named the conference Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Mitchell's averaged 16.4 points per game to lead the Highlassies and was the best in the conference. She was also named to the all-conference team along with sophomore Dariel Johnson. Johnson, a Dallas native, was second on the Highlassies' squad averaging 9.0 points per game and led the team with 3.6 assists per game. Freshmen guard Jaylonn Walker of Calvert and forward Nadia Hayes of Seagoville were honorable mention selections. Walker averaged 8.6 points and 2.2 assists per game. Hayes averaged 8.1 points and led the team with 5.9 rebounds per game.
The Highlassies will take on Midland at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the Region V Tournament. Live video streaming of all tournament games will be provided by PSB Live at www.psblive.com.
