Highlanders & Vikings split doubleheader
The #1 McLennan Highlanders and #7 Grayson Vikings split today's conference doubleheader in Denison.
Grayson took game one 6-4 with Taryn Batterton taking the loss in the circle for the Highlanders.
McLennan began the scoring with three runs in the top of the first. Madison Garcia singled and scored on a Trinity Allen home run. Kyla Heine doubled, and Katia Reyes singled. Heine then scored on a fielder's choice by Madison Hornback.
The Vikings tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Mena Zamarron was hit by the pitch and advanced around to third on a wild pitch and ground out by Layne Reh. Halle Giaudrone then singled to score Zamarron. Emma Rodrigues and Samantha Hartman both singled. Abbey Wood then reached on an error, scoring Giaudrone and Rodrigues.
Grayson took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Zamarron walked and advanced on a passed ball. Reh then singled to score Zamarron.
Another Viking run scored in the bottom of the fifth. Rodrigues reached on an error and stole second. Hartman then doubled to score Rodrigues.
The final Grayson run came in the sixth. Sophia Jenkins reached first and advanced to second on an error. Isabella Didonato replaced Jenkins as the runner at second, and advanced on a wild pitch. Zamarron then singled to score Didonato.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh as Garcia doubled and scored on a single by Allen.
McLennan bounced back to defeat Grayson 14-5 in game two with Brinly Maples in the circle.
The Highlanders took the early lead with six runs in the top of the first inning. Taylor Meier and Garcia both singled. Meier scored on a double by Allen, and Reyes followed with a three-run homer. Chesnee Faile walked, stole second and scored on a single by Lilly Rocha. Rocha moved to second on the throw and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mickayla Tosch before scoring on the sacrifice fly by Aynsli Lawson.
McLennan added another run in the second. Allen was hit by the pitch but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Reyes. Faile walked, and Rocha singled to score Reyes.
Grayson's first run came in the bottom of the second. Caitlin Casas reached on an error and Hartman walked. Wood also reached on an error, loading the bases. Casas then scored on a fielder's choice by Jennaye Williams.
The Highlanders responded with three runs in the top of the third. Lawson and Ally Thompson both singled and advanced on a ground out by Meier. Garcia reached on an error, scoring Lawson. Thompson scored on a double steal, and Allen walked. Reyes then double to score Garcia.
Three more McLennan runs scored in the fourth. Tosch was hit by the pitch and Lawson singled, both advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Thompson. Meier singled to score Tosch, and Allen was hit by the pitch. Reyes then singled to score Lawson and Meier.
The Vikings added two runs in the fourth. Rodrigues walked and Casas singled. Hartman reached on an error, scoring Rodrigues, and Casas scored on a fielder's choice by Wood.
The Highlanders added a run with Tosch's solo home run in the fifth.
Grayson rounded out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Reh singled and scored on Giaudrone's home run.
