Highlanders win two to give Berry 200th win
The McLennan Highlander softball squad picked up a pair of wins today at Bosque River Ballpark to give head coach Chris Berry his 200th career victory.
McLennan opened the day with a 9-1 run-rule win over the Angelina Roadrunners with Katia Reyes in the circle.
The Highlanders put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Kyla Heine tripled and scored on a single by Trinity Allen. Aynsli Lawson walked and Madison Garcia singled, loading the bases. Allen then scored on a fielder's choice by Chesnee Faile.
Angelina's only run came in the top of the second as Lindsey McKnight singled and scored on a double by Lorelei Graham.
McLennan added a run in the bottom of the second as Madison Hornback doubled, advanced to third on a ground out by Sarah Johnson and scored on a sacrifice fly by Reyes.
The Highlanders exploded for six runs in the third to secure the runs for the run rule. Allen doubled and scored on a triple by Garcia. Maddie Moore and Hornback both walked to load the bases. Johnson singled to score Moore and Garcia. Reyes followed with the three-run homer.
In the nightcap, the Highlanders defeated the Tyler Apaches 11-3 in six innings with Taryn Batterton in the circle.
McLennan scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Mickayla Tosch and Allen both singled and advanced on a wild pitch. Heine walked to load the bases. Reyes reached on an error, bringing Tosch in to score. Faile then doubled to score Allen and Heine. Johnson walked, and Reyes scored on a ground out by Makenzi Jenkins.
The Highlanders added three runs in the second. Meier walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tosch. Heine singled and Reyes walked, both scoring on a triple by Faile.
Tyler's first run came in the top of the fourth. Jolie Bazan and Jordyn De Los Santos both singled. Bazan was out trying to steal home. Kaetlyn Mendez then doubled to score De Los Santos.
McLennan added a run in the fifth. Johnson walked and advanced on a back-to-back sac bunts by Jenkins and Ally Thompson. Meier then singled to score Johnson.
The Apaches scored two runs in the top of the sixth. Bazan and De Los Santos both singled. De Los Santos was out at second on a fielder's choice by Mendez. Daniela Gutierrez then singled to score Bazan and Mendez.
The Highlanders scored three in the bottom of the inning to secure the run rule. Tosch walked and Allen doubled. Heine singled to score Tosch. Allen stole home when Heine stole second. Heine then stole third and scored on an error to end the game.
