#6 Highlanders sweep #3 Odessa
Day 2 of the Battle on the Bosque was great for the No. 6 McLennan Highlanders as they swept the No. 3 Odessa Wranglers in a doubleheader
McLennan took game one 15-9 with Makenzi Jenkins getting the win in the circle.
Odessa scored four runs in the top of the first. Reganied Franka drew a lead-off walk and Taryn Blazevich singled. Renskee Tellekamp followed with a fielder's choice, and Franka scored on an error. Blazevich and Tellekamp advanced on a ground out by Neve Adams. Tyerra Kaaialii singled to score Blazevich, and Mackenzei Mahagan-Bernal doubled to score Kaaialii
McLennan tied the games with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Taylor Meier walked and advanced on a ground out by Madison Hornback. Trinity Allen was hit by the pitch, and Kyla Heine doubled to score Meier. Katia Reyes singled to score Allen and Heine, and Ellie Loveless doubled to score Reyes.
The Wranglers took the lead with a run in the top of the second as Diveli Cherry walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored, moved to third on a ground out by Franka and scored on single by Blazevich.
Three Highlander runs in the bottom of the second gave McLennan the lead. Meier singled and scored on a double by Allen. Heine singled, and Reyes singled to score Allen. A double steal brought Heine into score.
Another Odessa run scored in the third. Mason Barclay led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out by Kaaialii. Barclay then scored on an error.
McLennan tacked on five runs in the fourth. Hornback reached on an error and Allen was hit by the pitch. Both runners scored on a double by Heine. Reyes walked, and Loveless followed with a three-run homer.
The Wranglers scored one in the fifth. Adams doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Alana Duran. Duran then scored on a single by Kaaialii.
Odessa's final two runs came in the top of the sixth. Blazevich singled and Tellekamp walked. Both runners scored on a double by Barclay.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Anysli Lawson and Loveless both singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Madison Garcia. Sarah Johnson followed with a triple to score Lawson and Loveless. Johnson then scored on a single by Meier.
Game two was a 9-1 run-rule win for McLennan. Reyes picked up the win, allowing just one hit in five innings.
Three McLennan runs scored in the top of the second. Lilly Rocha and Chesnee Faile both doubled, and Hornback walked to load the bases. Jenkins also walked, scoring Rocha. Faile scored on a wild pitch, and Johnson walked. Meier grounded out, scoring Hornback.
The Highlanders scored one in the third as Allen doubled and scored on a double by Faile.
Three more McLennan runs scored in the fourth. Meier double and scored on a double by Loveless. Loveless advanced to third on the throw and scored on a ground out by Allen. Rocha followed with a solo home run.
The final two Highlander runs came in the top of the fifth. Jenkins singled and was replaced by pinch runner Maddie Moore. Moore stole second and scored on a double by Johnson. Brinly Maples walked and was replaced by Garcia as the runner. Garcia stole second and Meier singled. Allen was then hit by the pitch, scoring Johnson.
Odessa's only run came in the bottom of the fifth. Kaaialii walked and Mahagan-Bernal reached on an error. Kendal Rushing then grounded out to score Kaaialii.
McLennan will face Chipola at 10 a.m. Sunday.
