McLennan hands Grayson first loss of 2021
The McLennan Softball squad defeated the Grayson 8-7 in game one of today's doubleheader at Bosque River Ballpark, handing the Lady Vikings their first loss of the season. Reese Taylor got the complete-game victory in the circle.
Grayson jumped out early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. J.T. Smith singled and moved to second on a ground out by Sage Harlow. Cheyenne Stark followed with a single to score Smith. Dominique Rodriguez then tripled to score Stark, and Rodriguez scored on a single by Maci Sanders.
McLennan got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first as Melayna Lopez walked and scored on a Lindsey Evans home run.
The Lady Vikings added a run in the third. Stark reached on an error and Rodriguez singled. Stark then scored on a fielder's choice by Vess.
Two more Grayson runs scored in the fourth to put the Lady Vikings up 6-2. Smith singled and Harlow followed with a two-run homer.
McLennan added two runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to two, 6-4. Julia Herzinger walked and scored on a triple by Sidney Campion. Campion then scored on a single by Kadyn Trochim.
Four runs in the bottom of the sixth gave McLennan the lead. Kenzie Chambers doubled and scored on a single by Lopez. Caitlyn Wong was hit by the pitch and Watson singled to load the bases. Genesis Rodriguez replaced Wong as the runner at third. Campion walked, bringing Lopez in to score. Trochim then singled to score Rodriguez and Watson.
Grayson rounded out the scoring with Vess' home run in the top of the seventh.
Grayson bounced back to defeat McLennan 8-1 in five innings of game two with Gracy Crafts taking the loss.
The Lady Vikings scored one run in the top of the first as Smith singled, stole second and third, and scored on a ground out by Rodriguez.
Herzinger's home run for McLennan in the second inning tied the game at one.
Grayson added seven runs in the third. Harlow and Stark both walked. Rodriguez followed with a single to score Harlow. Sanders also walked. Stark scored on a wild pitch and Carmen Eilersten walked. Macee Cobb singled to score Rodriguez and Sanders. Smith followed with a three-run homer.
The Lady Vikings secured the run rule with an Ella Laurence home run in the top of the fifth.
McLennan will host Ranger for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Bosque River Ballpark.
