McLennan, Howard split softball doubleheader
McLennan and Howard split today's softball doubleheader in Big Spring.
McLennan shutout Howard 6-0 in game one with Emily Klanika in the circle.
The Highlassies scored two runs in the first as Genisa Marrero-Carter singled and scored on Sophie Wideman's home run.
McLennan added a run in the third. Kaelin Morkisch and Marrero-Carter both singled and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Arianna Perales. Morkisch then scored on a ground out by Kaitlin Richards.
Two more Highlassie runs scored in the fourth. Olivia Lantigua, Emeri Eubanks and Lindy Alexander all singled to load the bases. Rebeca Fajardo followed with a fielder's choice to score Lantigua. Morkisch then reached first safely on an error, allowing Fajardo to score.
McLennan's final run came in the top of the seventh as Marrero-Carter singled and scored on a Howard error.
Howard defeated McLennan 10-7 in game two with Carla Torres taking the loss in the circle.
McLennan scored three runs in the top of the first. Morkisch drew a lead-off walk, stole second and scored on a single by Perales. Richards followed with a two-run homer.
The Hawks got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first. Amanda Gonzalez led off with a home run, and Paige Hallam doubled. Hallam then advanced to third on a ground out by Angelina Garcia and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooke Parker.
Howard took the lead with two runs in the third. Gonzalez singled and Hallam doubled. Gonzalez was thrown out at home trying to score on a fly ball. Parker followed with a two-run homer.
Five more Hawks scored in the bottom of the fifth. Garcia doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Anastasiia Makeshina. Parker followed with another two-run homer. Marissa Salinas walked and Bailey Martinez singled. Addison Lewis cleared the bases with a three-run homer.
McLennan's final four runs came in the top of the sixth. Wideman singled and Alexander drew a walk. Lantigua followed with a fielder's choice, putting Wideman out at third, and Fajardo walked to load the bases. Marrero-Carter flied out to score Alexander. Eubanks followed with a three-run home run.
Howard rounded out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Garcia singled and Parker was hit by the pitch. Garcia was out at third on a fielder's choice by Alyssa Graft. Salinas then doubled to score Parker.
McLennan will host Kilgore for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Bosque River Ballpark.
