Highlanders fall in regular season finale
The McLennan Highlanders closed out the regular season with an 99-90 loss to the Grayson Vikings on the road this afternoon.
Grayson controlled the game early on, building an eight-point lead at 14-6 with 6:20 to go in the first half. A bucket in the lane from Kirk Smith Jr. began a 12-0 Highlander rally that put McLennan up by four, 18-14, with 11:09 to play in the half. McLennan pushed the lead to eight before the Vikings began to rally. Grayson tied the game at 33 with just under five minutes remaining before halftime and after exchanging the lead with the Highlanders, the Vikings led 42-41 at intermission.
Grayson began to pull away early in the second half an took the first double-digit lead at 69-59 with 11:58 remaining in the game. The Vikings led by as many as 14 down the stretch, 88-74, with 4:52 on the clock. McLennan rallied late, cutting the lead to six with two minutes to play but that was as close as the Highlanders could get.
Nehemiah Nuckolls led the Highlanders with 20 points. Chris Pryor and Kirk Smith Jr. added 16 and 14, respectively. CJ Hall and Forte Prater scored 11 points each, and Dillon Gooding had 10.
