Highlassies, Higlanders victorious at Collin
The McLennan Highlassies kept their conference winning streak alive with a 67-60 victory over the Collin Lady Cougars Saturday afternoon in Plano.
The Highlassies opened the game on a 4-0 run and led 8-6 with 6:43 to play in the first. Patrickia Daily drained a long 3-pointer to spark the McLennan offense. Velma Mitchell hit a layup off an inbound pass under the basket and Nadia Hayes drained a fadeaway jumper to cap off a 7-0 Highlassie run. McLennan led 17-9 after one quarter of play.
The Highlassies stepped up on defense and heated up from behind the arc in the second quarter. Daily hit a 3-pointer from the corner and Jaylonn Walker hit two back-to-back following two consecutive Collin travels. Jordan Mullins continued the Highlassies' dominance in the second. Mullins tracked down a defensive rebound and took a pass and cut to the basket on the opposite end for a wide-open bucket off a pass from Mitchell. Mullins sprinted back on defensive and took a charge to end the Lady Cougars' next possession. McLennan led by as many as 17 in the quarter and held the 38-26 advantage at the break.
The teams slowed the pass in the third quarter. The Highlassies led 46-35 with 2:26 to go in the third. Collin ended the quarter on an 8-0 run to trim the McLennan lead to three going into the final period, 46-43. The Lady Cougars pulled within one with 7:31 remaining in the game, 48-47. The Highlassies used a 7-0 run, including five points from Hayes, to pull away.
Mitchell led McLennan with 14 points and Hayes had 13. Walker rounded out the Highlassies in double figures with 12.
The No. 6 McLennan Highlanders remain undefeated following Saturday's 76-62 victory over the Collin Cougars.
The game was close throughout the first half. Collin got on the board first with a pair of Boaz Williams free throws. A long Hayden Hunter 3-pointer put McLennan on the board. The two teams traded baskets for the first 10 minutes of play. The Highlanders led 18-17 with 9:40 remaining in the half. A Shannon Bogues 3-pointer gave McLennan its largest lead of the half, 21-17 with nine minutes to play. Williams hit a 3-pointer to pull the Cougars within one, and a pair of Travonta Robertson free throws put Collin up by one, 22-21. The Cougars led by five, 33-28, with four minute to play in the half. Hunter and Derrick Farquharson scored eight points in the final minutes, and the Highlanders' defense held the Cougars to one basket to give McLennan the one-point lead at the break, 36-35.
The Highlanders pulled away early in the second half. McLennan led 40-39 with 18:40 remaining in the game. The Highlanders used a 9-0 run, including six points from Farquharson, to take their first double-digit lead of the game at 49-39 with 14:35 on the clock. McLennan led by 15 several times down the stretch as they cruised to their fourth conference victory.
Farquharson led the Highlanders with a double-double, 27 points and 12 rebounds. Hunter added 16, and Bogues scored 15.
