Highlanders, Highlassies top Weatherford
The McLennan Highlanders picked up their first conference win with a 76-63 victory over the Weatherford Coyotes on the road.
The Highlanders opened the game on a 4-0 run. Weatherford responded with a 7-0 run to take the 7-4 lead with 17:20 to play in the first half. The Coyotes extended the lead to seven, 17-10, three minute later. McLennan used a 10-0 over the next six minutes to take the 20-17 lead. Weatherford tied the game at 25 with 6:15 remaining in the first half and led 38-35 at the break.
The Coyotes took the first double-digit lead, 46-36, with 18 minutes to play in the game. The Highlanders began to rally and took the one-point lead, 54-53, on a Jerami Grace 3-pointer midway through the second half. McLennan continued to pull away, leading by as many as 14 down the stretch.
Aundre Jackson led the Highlanders with 21 points. Shannon Bogues and Grace added 18 and 15, respectively.
In women's action, the McLennan Highlassies moved to 2-0 in conference play with a 59-48 win over the Lady Coyotes.
The teams seemed evenly matched to start the game. McLennan led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Highlassies began to pull away in the second quarter, using an 8-0 run down the stretch to take the 34-24 advantage into the break.
McLennan increased the lead to 15 with 2:52 to play in the third and held the 42-30 lead heading into the final period. Weatherford rallied in the fourth, cutting the lead to eight several times but it wasn't enough.
Caylinne Martin led the Highlassies with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
