Highlanders, Wranglers split doubleheader
The McLennan Highlanders and Odessa Wranglers split this afternoon's doubleheader at Bosque River Ballpark.
McLennan got the 7-0 shutout over Odessa in the opener with Gray Harrison getting the win on the mound.
The first two Highlander runs came in the second inning. Mateo Zeppieri was hit by the pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Marquis Jackson walked and Elijah Rodriguez singled, bringing Zeppieri in to score. Jackson advanced to third on an overthrow and stole home.
The final five Highlanders runs came in the bottom of the third. Ty Johnson singled and Cole Dillon drew a walk. Cole Fontenelle followed with a fielder's choice, putting Johnson out at third. Daniel Altman singled to score Dillon, and Zeppieri walked to load the bases. Katcher Halligan then singled to score Fontenelle. Altman and Zeppieri both scored on an Odessa error, and Halligan scored on a passed ball.
Odessa took the nightcap 12-5 over McLennan with Devin Bennett taking the loss on the mound.
The Wranglers scored four runs in the second inning. Dylan Heim singled, stole second and third. Tucker Gideon then singled to score Heim. Chase Diggins reached on an error, moving Gideon to third. Gideon scored on an error and Brandon Rincones singled to score Diggins. Rincones then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Nathan Van Mannen single.
Odessa added a run in the third as Conor Myles doubled and scored on a double by Liam MacDonald.
Another Wrangler run scored in the fourth. Diggins walked but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Rincones. Rincones then advanced to second on an error and scored on a Van Mannen double.
McLennan got on the board with a run in the fourth. Johnson and Fontenelle both singled. Johnson then scored on a sacrifice fly by Altman.
Three Highlander runs scored in the fifth. Hank Bard singled and Rodric Black drew a walk. Bard advanced to third on a passed ball and Black was caught stealing. Bard then stole home. Johnson walked and Fontenelle was hit by the pitch. Dillon also walked, loading the bases. Altman walked to score Johnson, and John Ceccoli walked to score Fontenelle.
McLennan's final run came in the sixth. Bard walked and Black was hit by the pitch. Both runners advanced on a balk. Bard then scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnson.
Odessa added a run in the seventh as Myles doubled and scored on a single by Heim.
The final five Odessa runs came in the top of the eighth. Gideon reached on an error and Diggins bunted for a single. Rincones followed with a single to score Gideon. Van Mannen then doubled to score Diggins. Rincones and Van Mannen both scored on a single by Tyson Pointer. Pointer then stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Myles, and scored on a fly out by Heim.
McLennan returns to action at Bosque River Ballpark, hosting Blinn at 1 p.m.
