Highlanders drop season opener
The McLennan Highlanders dropped today's season opener 11-5 to the Navarro Bulldogs in Corsicana with Will Carsten taking the loss on the mound.
Navarro took the lead early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Dickey drew a walk and scored on a triple by Wesley Jordan. Jordan then scored on a ground out by Ethan Bates.
The Bulldogs added six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Joel Shea was hit by the pitch and Tyler Abrego singled. Caden Koerbacher also singled, bringing Shea in to score. Campbell Sullivan reached on an error, scoring Abrego. Dickey then singled to score Koerbacher. A fielder's choice by Jordan put Sullivan out at home. Bates then followed with a three-run homer.
Navarro's final three runs came in the bottom of the seventh. Abrego walked and scored on a double by Koerbacher. Koerbacher then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Sullivan.
McLennan got on the board with four runs in the eighth. Cole Fontenelle doubled and scored on a double by Drew Messick. Hank Bard then doubled to score Messick. Katcher Halligan singled to score Bard, and Mateo Zeppieri singled to score Halligan.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth as Fontenelle singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored as Messick reached on an error.
McLennan and Navarro will complete a three-game series with a noon doubleheader Saturday at Bosque River Ballpark.
