Highlanders & Chaparrals split on baseball diamond
The McLennan Highlanders and Midland Chaparrals split Friday's doubleheader in Midland.
The Chaparrals took game 6-5 with McLennan's Gray Harrison taking the loss on the mound.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first. Miguel Santos singled and Mason Greer drew a walk. Both runners scored on a triple by Garrett Martin. Dominic Tamez followed with a two-run homer.
Midland got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Garrett Williams walked and Jerrad Gibson singled. Both runners scored on a triple by Caleb Heuertz. Heuertz then scored on a wild pitch.
The Chaparrals took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Tyler Wulfert and Gibson were both safe on errors and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Colby Standard. Heuertz then singled to Wulfert. Jarek Wells walked to load the bases. Gibson was out at the plate on a fielder's choice by Gibrian Pena, and Heuertz scored on a passed ball.
McLennan tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Hank Bard single and was replaced by pinch runner Richard Brinson. Santos and Greer both singled, bringing Brinson in to score.
Midland stole the win with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Luke Bumpus was safe on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Williams. Wulfert then singled to score Bumpus and end the game.
McLennan bounced back to defeat Midland 9-5 in the nightcap with Riggs Threadgill picking up the win on the mound.
Midland began the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Wulfert was hit by the pitch, advanced to second on a single by Gibson, moved to third on a ground out by Colby Standard and scored on a passed ball.
The Highlanders tied the game with a run in the fifth. Martin walked, Alex Lopez was hit by the pitch and Tamez walked to load the bases. Martin then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bard.
McLennan took the lead with a run in the sixth. Nick Pierce was safe at first and advanced to second on an error. Santos singled and Pierce scored on another error.
Three more Highlander runs scored in the seventh. Tamez doubled and Bard was safe on an error. Ben Rosengard followed with a single to score Tamez. Rosengard advanced to second on a fly out by Pierce, and both runners scored on a fly out by Wyatt Childress.
The Chaparrals added two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Standard was hit by the pitch and scored on a Heuertz home run.
McLennan responded with two runs in the top of the eighth. Greer singled and scored on a double by Martin. Martin then moved to second on a ground out by Lopez and scored on a ground out by Tamez.
Midland's final two runs came in the bottom of the eighth. Bumpus doubled and moved to second on a ground out by Williams. Wulfert was safe on an error, bringing Wulfert in to score. Wulfert then moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a ground out by Standard and scored on another passed ball.
The Highlanders rounded out the scoring with two runs in the top of the ninth. Rosengard walked and Jaylen Williams doubled. Rosengard scored on a Midland error and Williams scored as Santos hit into a double play.
