Highlanders go 3-1 in Tournament of Champions
The McLennan Highlanders fell to the Alvin Dolphins 11-6 Friday in their opening game of the San Jacinto Tournament of Champions.
Alvin jumped out to the early lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Edgar Santiago singled and Max Crabbe doubled. Santiago then scored on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins added another run in the second as Davila singled, advanced to third on a double by Daniel Burroway and scored on a double-play ball by Santiago.
Three more Alvin runs scored in the fourth. Crabbe doubled and Beto Cervantes was hit by the pitch. Martin Vasquez followed with a double to score Crabbe. Cervantes then scored on a ground out by Scott Herrmann. Burroway was hit by the pitch and Bryce Hughes singled, bringing Vasquez in to score.
McLennan got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth as Mason Greer singled and scored on Garrett Martin home run.
Alvin responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cervantes and Vasquez both singled. Herrmann followed with a three-run homer.
Mason Greer's solo home run for McLennan in the sixth trimmed the Alvin lead to five, 8-3.
Two more Highlander runs scored in the top of the eighth. As Blake Jackson doubled and scored on a Jaylen Williams home run.
Alvin's final three runs came in the bottom of the eighth. Santiago and Logan Hamm both walked. Crabbe was safe at first on an error, loading the bases. Cervantes singled to score Santiago and Vasquez singled to score Hamm. Crabbe then scored on a fielder's choice by Herrmann.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with another Greer home run in the top of the ninth.
The Highlanders bounced back to defeat No. 17 Odessa 3-1 in their second game of the day.
Odessa's only run came in the top of the third as Myles Jefferson singled, stole second and scored on a double by Sean Stephens.
McLennan took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third as Nick Pierce was hit by the pitch and scored on a Santos home run.
The Highlanders final run came in the bottom of the seventh as Pierce walked, moved to second on a balk and scored on a single by Santos.
McLennan began day two of tournament play with an 18-10 win over the Howard Hawks.
Howard scored one run in the top of the first. Justin Wishkoski singled but was picked off at first. Wilson Galvan also singled and scored on a double by Conagher Sands.
The Highlanders took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Santos led off with a solo home run. Greer then singled and scored on a Dominic Tamez home run.
Four McLennan runs scored in the bottom of the second. Jackson walked and Izzy Lopez was hit by the pitch. Santos singled to score Jackson. Greer then singled to load the bases. Martin followed with a doubled to clear the bases.
Galvan added a run for Howard with a home run in the top of the third.
The Highlanders added two runs in the bottom of the third as Izzy Lopez singled and scored on a Martin home run.
Six more Highlanders crossed the plate in the fourth. Williams singled and scored on a triple by Alex Lopez. Lopez then scored on an error. Jackson and Santos both walked. Greer singled to score Jackson, and Martin singled. Santos, Greer and Martin all scored on a Howard error.
The Hawks scored three in the fifth. Wishkoski, Galvan and Sands all walked, loading the bases. Calogero Paxia then walked to score Wishkoski. Galvan when Hunter Simmons was hit by the pitch, and Sands scored on Kevin Ortiz' walk.
Three more Howard runs scored in the seventh. Paxia doubled and Ortiz walked. Bernard Shivers singled to score Paxia. Wishkoski then doubled to score Ortiz and Shivers.
The final two Hawk runs came in the top of the eighth. Sands doubled and scored on a double by Simmons. Ortiz then singled to score Simmons.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hank Bard walked and scored on a double by Jackson. Izzy Lopez then singled to score Jackson, and Lopez scored on an error.
The Highlanders closed out their tournament appearance with a 17-8 domination of No. 12 San Jacinto.
McLennan jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the top of the second. Williams was hit by the pitch and Alex Lopez doubled. Jackson was also hit by the pitch to load the bases. Ben Rosengard singled to score Williams, and Santos singled to score Lopez and Jackson. Rosengard and Santos both advanced on stolen bases. Rosengard then scored on a sacrifice fly by Greer, and Martin singled to score Santos.
An Alan Shibley home run in the bottom of the second put San Jacinto on the board.
The Highlanders added two runs in the third as Rosengard bunted and scored on a Wyatt Childress home run.
Another McLennan run scored in the fourth. Greer walked, Martin singled and Williams walked to load the bases. Alex Lopez then walked to score Greer.
Luke Pectol's homer for San Jacinto in the fourth to cut the lead to 8-2.
One Highlander run scored in the sixth. Martin was hit by the pitch and Williams singled. Martin then advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Lopez.
Two Gator runs scored in the bottom of the sixth as Lex Garcia was hit by the pitch and scored on a Mason Lytle home run.
McLennan tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh. Rosengard walked and scored on a Santos home run. Greer doubled and Martin was hit by the pitch. Tamez then singled to load the bases. Alex Lopez followed with a single to score Greer.
Sabin Ceballos homered for San Jac in the bottom of the seventh, making the score 12-5 Highlanders going into the eighth inning.
Three more Highlander runs scored in the top of the eighth. Rosengard, Childress and Santos all walked. Greer followed with a single to score Rosengard and Childress. Santos then scored on fly out by Martin to bring the score to 15-5.
Lytle homered for San Jacinto to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Greer then doubled and scored on a single by Pectol.
McLennan scored two more in the ninth. Rosengard walked, Childress singled and Santos walked, loading the bases. Rosengard scored on a wild pitch and Childress scored on a ground out by Greer.
The final San Jacinto run came in the bottom of the ninth as Garcia walked, moved to second on a defensive indifference and scored on a single by Lytle.
