No. 10 Highlanders sweep No. 11 Weatherford
The No. 10 McLennan Highlanders swept the No. 11 Weatherford Coyotes this afternoon at Bosque River Ballpark.
McLennan got a 10-0 run-rule victory over Weatherford in game one with Grant Miller picking up the win on the mound.
The Highlanders jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Ryan Neitsch and Jordan Yeatts drew back-to-back walks. Garrett Martin followed with a three-run homer.
McLennan added five runs in the second. Ryan Bishop walked, Neitsch was hit by the pitch and Yeatts bunted to load the bases. Jalen Battles followed with a double to score Bishop and Neitsch. Cole Moore then singled to score Yeatts and Battles. Moore advanced around to third on a Weatherford error and scored on a fielder's choice by Brooks Embry.
The Highlanders sealed the run rule with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Battles walked, Moore doubled and Martin walked, loading the bases. Embry followed with the walk-off double, scoring Battles and Moore.
McLennan needed an extra inning to defeat Weatherford 8-7 in the nightcap. Tanner Brooks got the win on the mound for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders scored three in the third. Aidan Shepardson led off with a double and Neitsch singled. Shepardson scored on a wild pitch, and Yeatts singled to score Neitsch. Battles walked and Martin singled to score Yeatts.
Weatherford got on the board with a run in the fifth as Garrett Crews walked, move to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Highlander error.
McLennan responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Martin doubled and scored on Moore's home run.
The Highlanders added a run in the sixth. Battles singled and Martin walked. Battles then scored on a wild pitch.
The Coyotes added a run in the seventh. Cam Ehringer, London Greene and Cole Johnson all singled to load the bases. Ehringer then scored on a sacrifice fly by J.T. Thompson.
Three more Weatherford runs scored in the eighth. Connor Emmet doubled. Crews and Ehringer both walked to load the bases. Greene followed with a single to score Emmet and Crews. Ehringer then scored on a McLennan error.
McLennan scored a run in the bottom of the eighth as Martin tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Moore.
Weatherford tied the game with two runs in the top of the ninth. Hunter Geiser was safe on an error and Ty Bowring walked. Both runners advanced on a ground out by Emmet. Geiser came in to score on a passed ball, and Bowring scored on a sacrifice fly by Crews.
McLennan sealed the win with a run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Battles walked and advanced around to third on a wild pitch. Martin also walked. Moore followed with the sacrifice fly to score battles and secure the victory.
The sweep gives McLennan the series win over Weatherford as the Highlanders took three of four games from the Coyotes. The Highlanders continue conference play Wednesday, traveling to Vernon for a noon doubleheader with the Chaparrals.
